Meet Austin R Gomez of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin R Gomez

Hi Austin R, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Gwinnett and raised in Acworth, Georgia, surrounded by art and creativity due to my father’s influence as a painter and musician. From a young age, I was captivated by movies, making my first film at 10 and hosting a neighborhood screening. Though I drifted into sports and used lacrosse to get into college, my parents’ encouragement eventually brought me back to filmmaking. Their support was pivotal in helping me complete my degree and launch my first film. Now based in Atlanta, I focus on creating authentic, diverse stories, inspired by my Thai and Cuban heritage, like my film “The Humming Grows,” which features Hispanic and mixed-background characters in lead roles.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. In 2016, I arrived at SCAD in Savannah on a lacrosse scholarship after de-committing from Young Harris in north Georgia, but that didn’t last long. I went in and out of SCAD, changing my major several times—from fashion to sound, animation to writing—before deciding to move to Atlanta and start my film journey in 2021. Balancing my passion for filmmaking with other interests and responsibilities was challenging, especially as I struggled academically. Finding my place in a creative industry that often lacks diversity was also tough. However, with my parents’ support and encouragement, I overcame these obstacles, completed my degree, and started creating the diverse and authentic stories I’m passionate about.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in directing, focusing on creating authentic and diverse stories that break traditional stereotypes. My work primarily features Hispanic and mixed-background characters in leading roles, reflecting my own Thai and Cuban heritage. I’m known for my dedication to representing underrepresented communities in genre films, aiming to bring fresh perspectives to the screen. I’m most proud of my film “The Humming Grows,” which embodies the type of movies I’ve always wanted to see. This film not only showcases my creative vision but also highlights the importance of diverse representation in cinema.

What makes you happy?
Creating stories that resonate with people and offer diverse perspectives makes me happy because it lets me share meaningful and important stories. Filmmaking is my way of connecting with others and bringing underrepresented experiences to the screen. Growing up as a Thai and Cuban American, I saw the lack of representation in media and wanted to change that. Crafting stories that challenge stereotypes and highlight diverse backgrounds is incredibly fulfilling. Seeing audiences connect with my films and gain new insights is rewarding. My family’s support has been crucial in this journey, and knowing that I’m making them proud keeps me motivated. Ultimately, I love using filmmaking to share stories that matter and make a difference.
