Meet Austin Yapp of Lionheart Custom Framing in Virginia Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Yapp.

Austin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I met my two business partners Alton Baker and Rasanath Dasa in 2011. We were all working at a frame shop in Buckhead and quickly becoming tired of working for big box stores. Alton and I jumped ship to start working for a smaller shop; We decided to start branching out offering hand painted embellishments, gilded bevels, full art mat extensions, and overall just a level of service that no other frame shop would ever offer. We were told to stop spending so much time on our customers and offering these truly custom elements. Long story short, this is when we got serious about opening our own place. After years of skype meetings and much planning we opened our doors in April of 2015 and have loved creating unique frame designs for our clients ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
Thankfully it has been a rather smooth ride. Lots of time and dedication to the business.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lionheart Custom Framing story. Tell us more about the business.
Lionheart is one of the most truly custom frame shops in the United States. We specialize in altering the materials used in the framing project to better connect to the artwork. We are most known for our work with concert posters since they tend to be a bit more exciting. The screen printed nature of these posters allows for a broad range of options as far as the embellishments are concerned. We are proud that we have a loyal customer base and also very proud to make something truly unique for them, which is why we will never do an identical job to one we have done in the past. This ensures that our customers go home with a frame that no one else will ever have. These custom elements that we offer is exactly what sets us apart from many other frame shops.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In an industry that has a very traditional stigma, I see more of a younger crowd looking for custom framing these days. I do see some companies popping up online offering custom framing but I don’t think that type of service will last. Framing is such a personal thing that working one on one with a good designer has no alternatives. There will always be a need for framing and artwork preservation.
