Meet Avoly Wainwright of MeMe’s in Perry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avoly Wainwright.

Avoly, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mom and I opened MeMe’s four years ago in my sweet little hometown of Perry, GA. I graduated with a degree in Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design from Georgia Southern University and while finishing school the amazing opportunity to open MeMe’s fell into our lap. My mom was a full-time 3rd-grade teacher and I was a full-time student. That year still seems like a blur but the people of Perry have loved us so well these past four years and we could not be more grateful.

I have always loved to style people. Even at a very young age, I remember dressing my baby dolls in outfits that coordinated with each other. And the term “that doesn’t match” was repeated quite often in our house. My mother’s words still ring in my ear every time I get dressed in the morning. My mom has always been my go to shopping partner. Even now with a child of my own, I still don’t buy anything without her approval first. So it’s so much fun that we are able to do this together. She has always inspired me as a businesswoman and also a mother.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Oh, absolutely not! I don’t think that anything worth doing is ever a smooth road. There have been really hard days and then the best days ever. It’s definitely difficult to work so closely with your best friend who also happens to be your Mom. We agree on almost everything but when we don’t…. we don’t. Thankfully, we are quick to move on. Currently, the biggest struggle is balancing home life and work life. I am a new mom to my precious three months old and enjoy spending time with him but also love being a working mom. I have an incredible support system and that makes it more than manageable.

Please tell us about MeMe’s.
MeMe’s has a carefully curated selection of clothing, shoes, accessories, and now gift items as we expand into our new gift store! We pride ourselves on offering an experience when you shop with us. You will almost always see Mom or myself when you are shopping. I think it’s important that we interact with the customers to find out what they’re looking for and what needs we should be filling. MeMe’s has grown exponentially in the past four years, more than I ever could have imagined! We have the most amazing customers and it is never lost on me that they choose me to dress them for some of the most important occasions in their life!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
That’s tough! If I had to do it over again, I think I would have really focused on our social media presence more. And started out with more confidence. I remember being so shy to talk on social media and worried that we weren’t talented enough to make it. I think that everybody has to find their own presence on social media and their own voice. I have learned that my audience likes to see a little bit of real life. There are nights my videos consist of little no makeup and a crying baby. The older I get the more I learn that it’s always best just to be yourself! It’s comforting to know you aren’t alone.
