Today we’d like to introduce you to Aybriel Beckham.
Aybriel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am the owner of AybrielBTV Media Company. I started my journey off at Savannah State University, where I served as the lead anchor on SSU Today and Tiger Eye News. After I graduated from college, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in news. I always had a passion for the news industry since middle school but little did I know after graduation, I was in for a long journey. I applied to 469 jobs and on the 460th job, I landed a job at WTVY News 4 in a small town called Dothan Alabama.
During this time, it was very trying but I knew to be a Reporter was my dream job and I was willing to do anything to make it work. During the process of job hunting, I was unemployed for six months but trusted the Lord and his plan and it worked out in the end. I started working at WTVY on November 7, 2017. My time at WTVY really tested my faith and honestly made me question if I was ready to be a journalist. I was considered the underdog and never received any opportunities. I remember my first week on the job my News Director called me in her office and told me “You suck and I don’t think this is the field for you.” Instead of taking it to heart, I prayed and kept God first and shortly after that a few opportunities started to open but it was still a constant battle with my News Director. I went home and perfected my craft every night. I took my computer home practiced editing, anchoring, and just read up on how to be a better journalist. I will never forget reaching out to my mentors Aleah Hordges and Professor Haynes for feedback and to this day, I couldn’t have made it as a journalist without them.
After a year and a half at WTVY God gave me the vision to step out on faith and start my own business. At first, I was very hesitant I didn’t have the money I was only making 11.00 an hour so I ignored God. He whispered it one more time and I listened. The next day I put my two weeks in and my News Director said: “Were going to let you go without any penalties thank you for your service”. From there, I knew God knew what he was doing because it cost 2,000 or more to break a news contract. A week later, I applied to cover the Trifecta Gala during Kentucky Derby weekend. Anyone that knows anything about the Kentucky Derby knows it’s a huge event. The application said five years of experience, I only had a year and five months at the time. I got a call the next day and I was approved. My first red carpet with my brand I interviewed some of my favorite celebrities. Maxine Waters, Vivica Fox, Chirs Tucker, Bryson Tiller and more. That was the confidence I needed I knew from there the sky was the limit and God was covering AybrielBTV.
Months later, I began to prepare by creating a website, invested in my own equipment everything. I had 1,000 dollars in my account but nothing was going to stop me. To fast forward, I moved back to Atlanta at the end of May 2019 and now my main goal is to market AybrielBTV. I built AybrielBTV because when I was in news I was always the underdog no one ever wanted to take a chance on me so I took one on myself. AybrielBTV gives people that have a passion for news a platform to showcase their talent. I’m just getting started but mark my words AybrielBTV will be a billion-dollar company one day.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Struggles I’ve faced were people constantly telling me no. People don’t want to take a chance on a new entrepreneur or either feel they’re too good to pay for services. I know along the way I will receive a lot of No’s but now I take those with a grain of salt and look forward to potential paying clients.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
