Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayo-Keisha Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ayo-Keisha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Over 15 years ago, I made the decision to become a cosmetologist. I have specialized in the care of ethnic, non- chemically- treated hair for over a decade. At the root of my passion for natural hair is my own personal hair experience: when I decided to transition from relaxed hair to natural styles, I encountered a lack of understanding and appreciation from service providers, employers, and peers. It was at that point, that I committed myself to understanding the innate characteristics (and benefits) of natural hair. In 2012, I wrote the book “Natural Hair Quest” in order to expand my ability to offer insight and professional advice to persons curious about the functionality and beauty of natural hair. It has always been my hope to present facts and options in a way that may encourage others to celebrate the hair that God gave them, and to redefine themselves based on their own standards and values. I teach seminars to hair- care professionals and consumers, and have performed at natural hair care conferences and showcases. I am particularly noted for my work with color, and have consistently taught color technique classes at the World Natural Hair Show, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road but a beautiful journey, when I began working in a salon, immediately following beauty school, my mom would schedule an appointment to get her hair done every week so that I would always have a client. It is inspiration like this that has kept me motivated to do what I love.
Please tell us about Natural Hair Quest.
I have Natural Hair Quest- the studio which is a hair salon where I provide natural hair care services such as, lock maintenance, undetectable braiding techniques, protective styles, and color services.
Natural Hair Quest- the book was written to educate persons curious about the beauty of natural hair.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not have done anything differently because it was those experiences that taught me the do’s and don’ts and helped me to grow into the business woman I am today.
