Today we’d like to introduce you to Lanada Chanel Duncan.
Lanada, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a beach bum at heart. For me, The beach is a special place because it puts me at peace. With every beach experience, I take away a fondness and appreciation for the beautiful colors, hues, and tones of settings I encounter during my walks along the shore.
Over the past 10 years, I learned to mix patterns, colors and tones together to create a beautiful, peaceful living, work and play spaces.
In 2015, I began using this talent more frequently to style my home and spaces in the homes of family members and friends. And then thus launched b.e. decors. I also sold home decor and accessories, and for a short timewhile, had my own designer booth in an antique and interior design store on Canton Street in historic Roswell, Ga.
I now use decorating as a way to help clients experience in their home the tranquility and peace that I get from being near the ocean [to symbolize this passion, the b.e. in b.e. decors stands for beachy-earth tones, as it represents the soft, calming colors, hues, and tones I most love to use when decorating spaces]. My ultimategoal is to transform a home or office space so that it provides the functionality and ease my client’s desire . This so closely relates to mirrors my own personal journey to self-care and wellness.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, there are challenges when growing a business, especially if you’re still holding down a full-time job. But I try not to dwell on obstacles. I believe if owning your own business is really what you want to do, you have to forge a path that takes you where you want to go. The onus is on you, not anyone else. This means learning how to discipline yourself in every area (managing your finances and your time, building the right relationships, learning new skills and improving on those you have).
My biggest challenge at this point in my business is placing myself in a position to learn everything I need to know about growing an interior decorating business. I’m good at seeking out information, but I want to be sure that I’m creating the business I want, not the one someone else wants for me.
Atlanta has very talented interior designers and decorators and I want to remain true to who I am and what I believe to be my passion for styling spaces, but I never want to stop learning new things.
Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of. What sets you apart from the competition?
As an interior decorating and styling company, b.e. decors provides a unique service to clients by taking the stress and indecision away from decorating and by creating a sophisticated, peaceful living and workspace that exude tranquility, comfort, functionality, and style.
We do this in 3 simple ways:
Use furniture and accessories that are comfortable, practical and functional.
Fuse patterns, textures, and tones to create an elegant sense of calmness while appealing to our client’s taste and decor style.
Creatively personalize and style pre-existing spaces to complement our client’s quality of life.
Ultimately, what sets b.e. decors apart is that we aim to create a peaceful, tranquil vibe in every space we style. We work mostly with professional women who lead busy lives and prefer living or workspace that reflects their quality of life and desire to embrace balanced living. I’ve styled my home this way, and I’m dedicated and extremely passionate about my work in this area, So much so that I recently created and decorated a “She-Cave” (akin to a “Man-Cave”) to serve as my personal retreat space in my home.
I’ve also recently created a service/product line that supports empowering women to embrace their own approach to emotional wellbeing. Through the new line, “She-Works, She-Slays, She-Caves,” I turn pre-existing spaces into a personal retreat area for women to enjoy special moments and self-care activities. Later this fall, I will launch a few products for women to use in their she-caves.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success will come in stages. For me, it’s getting to a point where I can leave my full-time job and my business is thriving on its own. By that I mean, having a ton of happy, repeat clients who love and experience feeling more at peace and comfortable in their living and workspaces.
Having carved my identity into the beautiful creative world of interior design… and it wouldn’t hurt to be acknowledged by some of the best in the business when I get to that point (I’m sure I have some ways to go but it’s good to have goals).
Being financially stable with happy, creative staff
From a material perspective…
**Definitely pushing to own a beach home and have my own interior design boutique somewhere near the water one day.
**I want my husband to be able to really retire from work and do nothing but play golf, smoke cigars, drink bourbon, and chase Corvettes and classic cars all day. If I can help him get there, then wonderful.
