Meet Jessica and David Kallenbach of Beauty Unveiled Studios in Little 5 Points

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica and David Kallenbach.

Jessica and David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My wife Jessica and I started Beauty Unveiled Studios six years ago with a vision to help our clients to see themselves in a very positive way by affirming the intrinsic beauty that each individual holds. Our purpose is to “unveil” each person’s beauty both to themselves and to any others with whom they would like to share their images. Our hope is that after a photo session with us at Beauty Unveiled Studios, our clients will begin to see themselves in a whole new light. We started six years ago with no formal photography training, no professional equipment, and no clue how to run a successful business.

All we had was a dream and vision for how we wanted to see that dream manifest. Now, six years later and hundreds upon hundreds of sessions under our belt with now professional grade camera gear and a fully equipped studio, the dream and the vision remains the same: to help people capture a strong sense of self-worth and confidence by seeing for themselves the beauty that they possess as individuals.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As any legitimate entrepreneur will attest to, building and maintaining a successful business is seldom, if ever, a smooth road. It’s been a journey of peaks and valleys. Jessica and I are complete D.I.Y.ers, which means that by and large, we have had to teach ourselves everything we know. Neither of us has any formal training in photography or business. What we have is an intense desire to succeed in the business and industry to which we feel called to make an impact. This desire to succeed has resulted in countless hours of “on the job training”, trial and error, a lot of failures, and a ton of self-education.

In a sense, we threw ourselves “to the wolves” and promised each other that we would figure out how to thrive in this business and industry. We really jumped in with both feet. We both left very solid and stable careers to pursue this passion full time. We put ourselves in a sink or swim situation knowing that we had to succeed or we would end up on the streets. We have oftentimes had to fight against the grim specter of discouragement, but it is maintaining a clear vision of why we are doing this that has helped to keep us moving forward. It’s the focus on why we are doing this, to begin with that has fueled the tenacity which has led us into the level of success that we are currently experiencing.

Beauty Unveiled Studios – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Beauty Unveiled Studios is a company whose primary emphasis is on connecting with people and helping them to see the beauty and worth that they hold within themselves. That is what we do and we use photography as a tool to accomplish that goal. We specialize in portrait style photography.

Jessica’s main emphasis is on glamour/pin-up/boudoir photography for ladies. What sets Jessica apart is that she does all the hair, makeup, and wardrobe styling for her clients, spending hours with them before the photo shoot even begins. Then, once she has competed the makeover portion of the session, Jess straps the camera on and begins shooting. But it is what happens during the session that clients seem to be most impacted by. Jess spends time making a real and very personal connection with each of the ladies that come to her. She discusses with them their dreams, joys, sorrows, and hopes…whatever it is that makes the client who they are. Jess digs for the gold within each woman and then seeks to use a Beauty Unveiled Session to highlight the treasure she finds.

Jess is the super artistic one handling all the photography, makeovers and editing. I myself am more focused on the business management aspects, though I am her second shooter on weddings, family sessions, engagement sessions, etc. What we are most proud of as a company is the fact that most clients who do a session with us end up becoming our friends.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
On the surface level, success by many peoples estimation is being able to support oneself financially by doing the work that they feel they were put on this planet to do. That’s one aspect of success. There are other aspects also though. For Jessica and I, even more important than the financial aspect is the concept of seeing our dreams that once seemed so distant, turn into our daily reality. At the end of every day, when she and I wrap up our work (whether that’s at 5:00 pm or 3:00 am, if she and I can look at each other with the confidence that we have invested our heart, blood, sweat, and tears that day into the relentless pursuit of our dream, then we can call it a day with a sense of satisfaction. To me, that is success.

Unfortunately, I’ve yet to be able to book a session with Jessica. However, through her having a small group meeting at her home with some former and potential clients, to share her story and show the studio, I was definitely blessed to be able to meet her. She is one of the kindest, warmest souls that I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting; and I’m blessed also to now cal her a friend.
