Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Carter.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ben. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my clothing brand officially in May 2019. I always had the idea of my clothing brand since middle school. The only thing that was holding me back was coming up with a name. I wanted it to have genuine meaning and something everyone can relate to. It wasn’t until I was playing Spades (card game) with my family and whenever it was my turn to play my dad would always say “Play to win son”. Thus, the name Play To Win was born, and my first t-shirt design, “Ace,” which consists of the various suits in a deck of cards. I started promoting my brand online through various social media platforms and selling to anyone willing to support my business. Within the first week, I had sold out the two shirts I designed, “Ace” and “Dice and Divas.” Later, I generated my website which featured pictures from those who purchased, many of whom were friends, family, and a few celebrities/influencers on social media. It was when I held my first photoshoot for my brand, at the well known Cam Kirk Studios in Atlanta, and connected with other entrepreneurs. I realized I had something special that could potentially take on a larger platform.
Has it been a smooth road?
I always believed in the quote, “If you find a path without obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere” – Frank A. Clark. I faced many obstacles within myself rather than physical obstacles. I had doubts about not being good enough when business would sometimes get slow and try to compare my success with other success. Then, I later realized you couldn’t determine your success based on another person. I had to understand that my business was still growing and that it is a process to get to where I wanted to be, and that slow success builds character.
Tell us more about the business.
Play To Win Clothing is a high-end streetwear fashion brand based out of Atlanta, Georgia. The purpose of my brand is to provide high-end streetwear fashion for all individuals of all diverse backgrounds. I am most proud of my brand’s genuine origin and the designs of the brand. My brand is best known for its designs; each of them is unique consisting of different “games” that brought my family and closest friends together in fellowship. These designs, I believe, also set my brand apart from others, the “ACE” shirt associates with various card games played, the “PLAY$” shirt consists of dice associated with dice games, and the “2 BALL” shirt that associates with the pool table game. These designs are not to be misconstrued with the concept of gambling. They are used to represent a form winning no matter the “game,” hence the name “Play To Win.”
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the future, I see my brand on the most significant platforms possible. I want my brand to be accessible to individuals around the world. My next significant shift will be an exclusive jersey collection. I have not yet revealed any of the products to the public so Atlanta Voyage has the first insight. The jersey collection will consist of basketball, baseball, hockey jerseys and more! This collection is expected to drop in Summer 2020.
