Meet Ben Provencial

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Provencial.

Ben, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Atlanta, GA. I started playing guitar at 12 years old and picked up singing when I was about 15 years old. I learned guitar quickly but I was honestly a terrible singer when I first started. I was in a few high school bands but it was always mostly just for fun.

After college, I moved to Boulder, CO, where I worked as a barista in a small coffee shop off Pearl St. I became obsessed with writing songs. My boss would let me use the cafe after business hours and I would bring my gear and just set up shop. I would drink way too much coffee and practice writing songs sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning.

At the time, I was mostly just learning how to work meter and melody. Steve Sparrow of former band Morning Parade was coaching me (remotely) on how to write structured pop songs. I owe so much to him for investing in me at an early stage & believing in my potential as an artist.

It took some time for me to grow into my own confidence as a writer. Performing took a backseat to songwriting but I was still playing shows every once in a while. Occasionally I would get flown out to play support shows. I played a few out of state shows with a folk band called Tall Heights. I opened up for English songwriter Lewis Watson and my college also asked me to come back to play the homecoming show, which was with T Pain and B.o.B.

I eventually moved back to Atlanta to be closer to my family. After playing and winning an open mic at Eddie’s Attic, I became connected with the Music Licensing Manager for Reach Records – Logan Russell. Logan ended up connecting me with a talented pop songwriter & producer named Zach Paradis. Over the course of seven months, Zach and I spent dozens of recording sessions in his bedroom studio working together on my solo project. We ended up flying out west to LA last February to work with two other writers/producers (Steve Sparrow & Tim Frieson). Together, we completed the first five songs.

The first song, ‘NOT ALRIGHT,’ was released on July 10th, 2020. The second song, ‘Hurting For You, was released on August 28th, 2020. Both songs can be streamed worldwide on any platform.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Writing is hard. I think my biggest takeaway has been to keep my head down and to schedule sessions even when I’m not necessarily feeling inspired. Writing is a lot like turning on a dirty faucet. It takes time and patience for the clean water and good ideas to flow.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I’m a pop artist/singer-songwriter from Atlanta. I specialize in songwriting and guitar playing. You can listen to my music on all platforms globally. I also teach guitar on the side.

My song ‘NOT ALRIGHT’ was recently featured on the influential MrSuicideSheep’s and Taj Tracks’ YouTube channels. My live performance videos for ‘NOT ALRIGHT’ and ‘Hurting For You’ were also both featured on award-winning global artist discovery platform – Music Crowns. If you like pop music – be sure to hit me with a follow on Spotify!
