Meet Benjamin Latta of Savage Production

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Latta.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
DJing was never really in my plan, but music was. In all actuality, I started DJing by mistake! I met DJ Matticus in July of 2012. I was performing in an open mic showcase at a local coffee shop. It wasn’t long before a friendship had begun. Matticus reached out to me one day, with a proposition. In just a few weeks he would need me to fill-in for him DJing at one of his weekly residencies. With some guidance in mixing/blending and a crash course in DJ software, I had my first gig booked. Today, seven years later, I am the owner/CEO Of a small production company. Savage Productions handles everything from DJing to event rental.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I started DJing, I never saw it as a full-time gig. In the beginning, there were many long days, and even longer nights. I’ve done everything you can think of. For a long year, my day/nights went like this… 6 am up and on my way to a job site. My first job of the day was slinging roofing shingles. My lunch breaks were filled with tacos and naps. Off the first job by 5, I was headed home to shower, then get ready for my set later on. I’d do my best to grab a few hours of sleep if I could before soundcheck at 8 pm. I’d normally start my show around 9 pm and go till 1 am. Finally, I’d end my night by stocking shelves at a grocery store. I guess you can stay that I have never been afraid of work! It hasn’t always been easy, but it has been worth it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Savage Production – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Sometimes it’s not a song that makes you emotional, it’s the people and things that come to mind when you hear it. A good DJ plays what you want to hear, a great DJ plays what you didn’t know you wanted to hear. If my job is done properly, I create a soundtrack to your favorite memories. When it comes down to it, in my opinion at least, you have to know how to read a room. What songs will get everyone interactive and involved! You have to have a love for all kinds of music, anywhere in my set I might drop in a gospel song or a HBCU interpretation of your favorite top 40s song. I think DJ Jazzy Jeff said it best ”I like the improvisation of jazz. That’s the thing with DJing, there’s so much improvisation you can do with cuttin’ and scratching, that is reminiscent of jazz music. Because its how you feel, you’re capturing a vibe and just going with it”.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Savage Productions is a new business. For the longest time I was just “DJ Latta”, and in later years, “The Savage DJ Latta”. Today we are a company Of DJs, Engineers, hosts and so much more. It’s not so much what we do, it’s what don’t we do! Got an event going on? We can do everything for you but provide the venue. (give us a year and we will have that as well) we hold several weekly residencies from DJing, Karaoke to trivia.
