Meet Beverly Johnson of Genesys Fitness in Huntsville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly K.Johnson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Beverly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started this business with a simple idea one Sunday afternoon in April 2015 while I was sitting on my couch. I’d been divorced for about a year. During that time, I was very intentional about healing and discovering my identity in this new season. Using my newfound tools, I wanted to help other women grow and walk in their power. Fun fact – Genesys Fitness (GenFit) was not the original business name. I put in my mind that my business should have a totally different name. And every name I had on my list was gone. (thank goodness!)

As I sat at my desk, totally frustrated, I asked myself what I wanted to provide my clients. And immediately, the phrase “a new beginning” came to my mind. The rest is history! It’s hard to believe that GenFit has turned five. I believe fit, healthy, and confident women empower the world, inspire change, and raise the next generation of leaders. I want to help you reclaim your identity and build confidence in your body through customized life training, motivation and fitness. I want to give you the keys to rebuild your identity and allow your mental and physical health to take priority in your life.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely NOT! There were failures along the way. One of the early struggles was not having a brick and mortar location. Because of the cost of rent, I had to change my approach to growing my clientele. One of the benefits of GenFit is that it’s a concierge service. I provide in-home training and online training solutions.

Fast forward five years, I still don’t have a brick and mortar location. The lesson I learned is to be flexible in your approach and create a niche market. I learned that my clients appreciate the option of remaining in their homes and reducing contact with other people, especially in light of the current COVID19 crisis. Many people are looking for alternatives to going to the gyms or fitness centers.

Genesys Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Genesys Fitness (GenFit) is a community of women who recognize the need to reclaim their lives and are emotionally ready to do the work. The name Genesys Fitness signifies a rebirth for the often “forgotten” woman: the divorce’, caretaker and empty-nester. At GenFit, we believe self-care takes priority over caring for others because it is in caring for ourselves that we make the best caregivers. We believe that by helping women rediscover who they are after suffering a loss, she will be empowered to become her ideal self – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

GenFit is a safe space where women can transform their mindset, body, and life in a caring and non-judgmental environment. Through candid conversations and fitness training, “forgotten “women are empowered to reclaim their identity and unveil the strength inside by working 1-on-1.

I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to grow and evolve over the years. It takes a great amount of patience and determination to keep going. It’s always my joy to see a client achieve her goals. To see her walk in her power and confidence is a beautiful thing!

What sets me apart from others? It’s my belief on focusing on the total person instead of the physical weight. In many cases, the physical weight is a symptom of the emotional weights that we’ve been carrying. It’s important to recognize and heal those areas. I believe that fitness is beyond exercise. It requires us to grow on all levels. My concierge service allows my clients to shed the emotional and physical weight that they’ve been carrying.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Oh wow, that’s a tough one! My proudest moments would include being selected as a brand ambassador for Glamourina Activewear (a Black-Owned Fitness Apparel company in Maryland). It was my first ambassadorship and I was grateful for the opportunity.
