Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Shelton.
Hi Bianca, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into the world of skincare began out of a deep-rooted necessity for cleaner and healthier alternatives, fueled by a profound personal experience. Witnessing my father’s struggle with an autoimmune disorder that manifested in patches of severely compromised skin resembling burns ignited my quest for a solution rooted in purity and care.
Driven by the sheer need for a skincare regimen that would be gentle yet effective for my father’s sensitive condition, I delved into the world of natural ingredients and formulations. I researched and handpicked organic herbs, essential oils, and gentle elements that became the cornerstone of my skincare line.
Every creation is Made From Love, ensuring that those who use it experience the same care and dedication that started this journey—a journey born out of necessity, fueled by love, and devoted to crafting skincare that truly makes a difference.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a black-owned skincare has been a rewarding venture, but it also comes with its unique set of challenges. One of my biggest challenges has been access to capital. Securing funding is a challenge when dealing with biases in the financial industry.
The Second biggest challenge has been representation in the beauty and skincare industry that has historically lacked diversity, both in product offerings and marketing. Breaking into the market and gaining visibility has been a huge disadvantage for black-owned skincare in the industry due to prevailing industry standards.
Other challenges I have experienced were navigating Industry Networks and attempting to build relationships within the beauty industry while overcoming consumer perceptions often steeped in stereotypes and biases regarding the effectiveness or relevance of products from black-owned businesses.
Lastly, Competition. The skincare market is highly competitive, and breaking through with a unique value proposition can be tough. Establishing a brand that stands out in a crowded market requires creativity and persistence.
