Today we’d like to introduce you to Big Steppa Nel.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From the time I was in middle school, I was kickin random freestyles with the guys. People always told me from about the age of 15. I need to be rapping for real. From my first job Up until the year 2018 day of May 31, I never could keep a job longer than a month or two. I quit my job and created my first song by the name (Diamonds). I went home and uploaded it on sound cloud and the reaction was amazing. I counted 1500 plays in the first week, I was shocked. I began to get booked all throughout Atlanta in multiple clubs (buck head lofts every Thursday) (God is Dope) (Ice bar) etc. within the first year.
Biggest show being (Chris brown after party in ice bar) and buck head loft performance with mulatto and skooly. I was personally asked by a known club promoter in ATL by the name of Charley to perform weekly in various clubs throughout Atlanta and I did that up until mid-2019’s since then I put out a tape (Drip Dreams) under my former name (Drippy Nel) a tracklist of 10 songs & 4/10 were rated stars on Apple Music. I shot a music video by the name of “West Coast Drip” (first one), and I made a viewing of 1,000. I get paid $250 for features and have been featured in multiple shows in NC, GA & LA. (All independently funded)
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been an easy road. When I first started out me quitting my job left me to do these things w/ money I could scrape up from here & there and with the help of my guys. Mainly my right-hand man Duey. I got evicted out of my apartment back in 2018 while getting booked to do shows for free because I needed the exposure. It was nights I slept in my car cause I wouldn’t bring myself to tell people I had nowhere to go. But in the end, it was worth it. So no, it wasn’t smooth at all.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
The Big Steppa branding is a representation of someone who isn’t afraid to be the most confident In The room, someone who ain’t afraid to be heard, having drippins and motivates to get some money. My label sets us apart from others cause it’s pure authentic and you can’t fake it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say “luck,” but it’s been a lot of earned progression. Whatever is going to happen is already written up, so it’s not a matter of luck. It just why comes with it on your journey.
