Meet BJ Orr of B’Creative Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to BJ Orr.

Thanks for sharing your story with us BJ. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from Columbia SC. Grew up in “the hood” I guess you would say lol. Moved to Atlanta after High School with the hopes of doing something (anything) with my life. With a 1.7 GPA to my name, I enrolled in The Art Institute of Atlanta where I studied Music and Video Production.

Through the course of my studies, I came to realize that I wanted to Produce and Direct. I went on to land gigs with FOX 5… then CNN… then Coca-Cola before I was laid off. I was devastated! Had worked so hard to confirm and grow my skill set. I then decided to use the skills and knowledge I had gained to fuel my independence. I vowed that I would never have to rely on a full-time job again.

I took my savings and purchased $5000 worth of equipment. I went online and began studying various tutorials on producing, editing and videography. I began documenting & interviewing upcoming Rap Artist on their lifestyles and careers. I would then take those interviews; compile them into a DVD; package them and distribute them via retail and online sites. My projects were picked up by Netflix and Walmart; and expanded to reach Hip Hop fans around the world.

As YouTube and various online video blogs began to take over my DVD sales went down. I needed a new business model; a new hustle. I then formed B’Creative Media. I rebranded my self and began to go after Big budget projects and corporate clients. Through persistence, a few connections from old associates and a lot of hard work; doors began to open for me.

My team travels the country Producing/Shooting/Editing original content for companies like Coca-Cola, Delta, Jackson Spalding, Chic-fil-A, COX, Chevy, and iHeart Radio to name a few. Even though I still have a long way to go I’ve learned that walls are meant to be knocked down and that there is no limit to what we can do if we have the vision and determination to make it happen. What’s my motivation?…. My biggest fear of course… “Failure”

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest obstacle was myself. I was raised in a bad environment with no values and developed a negative character. In order to change I had to watch and learn from others. How they communicated, their work ethic, how they handled adversity.

I had to reshape my thinking to become a more positive, well-spoken considerate person that people want to do business with. I struggled trying to prove my value to people. I saw others around me get handed the torch while I would beg for opportunities. It forced me to constantly re-evaluate my character and to work to grow my skill-set. It made me dig deeper and fight harder to prove my worth.

Being laid off was a setback. At the time I was laid off I was also going through a bankruptcy. Luckily a friend had put my name in for a freelance gig a GPBTV. I started contracting, and my income doubled. I began saving, investing, learning, growing, expanding. Turned out to be a set-up for a come up.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m the principle and Senior Producer/Editor at B’Creative Media. We are a Video Production and Content Development company that produces Corporate Communications, Broadcast, and SM content for distribution, large agencies, fortune 500’s, non-profits and small businesses.

I’m known for being a great storyteller. I specialize in telling cool brand stories that inspire/educates employees and enlightens/entertains audiences.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is seeing clients happy and pleased with the thought of doing business with me and my team. Success is realizing that my hard work allows me the opportunity to travel the world, work with cool people and create cool stuff. Success is being a good role model for my kids and being blessed with opportunity that allows me to be a provider.

Success is checking off another notch on that to do list. Success is having the respect an admiration of your peers and associates. Success is being able to give back, teach, and help others reach their goals.
