Meet BK Abdullah

Today we’d like to introduce you to BK Abdullah.

Hi BK, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Originally from New York, my family and I moved to College Park, GA in 2000. I began producing music in 2002 when my older brother purchased FL Studio on our desktop computer. Every day since then, I began teaching myself how to use the software after school. I would create different genres of tracks and told myself that I would land my first placement after high school. In 2006, I began learning how to use Pro Tools when my sister Majee Dupree was on Tour singing covers and original records with internationally known recording artist Akon. For the next few years, I had recorded various artist local artists at my home recording studio in Atlanta. One of my friends, Fabio Legarda called with an opportunity to have a placement with Affix Music with one of our records. In 2010, I had decided to learn the skill of audio engineering. The decision came to me after entering a beat battle and realizing how important music mixing full track out records were. For the next few years, I continued to study audio engineering while interning at select studios around Atlanta. In 2011, I had places a record in a Warner Brothers film as a sync licensing placement of a record that I had produced in 2008 with Fabio as the artist on the record. It was Fabio who introduced me to the use of PROs or (Performance Rights Organizations) during the timeframe of us getting the placement. PROs were created to be provide creators the ability to receive their royalties off their works as passive income. In 2016, I enrolled at SAE Institute of Atlanta to learn any info about audio engineering that I believe I didn’t learn outside the institution. After graduating in 2017 with my Associates of Science Degree in Audio Technology, I then interned at a local recording studio to learn to mix as well. (The best way to learn how to mix is to practice as much as possible with what ever DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) you have access to.

Since graduating SAE, between 2017 and 2021 I have recorded over 1000+ records as a head engineer of a local recording studio in Atlanta. Over the time I’ve recorded lots of artists such as Waka Flocka Flame, Lil Baby, Gunna, Queen Naija, Bone Crusher, Justice League, Jim Jones, Akon and had even recorded an intro with Rick Flair for an album he was featured on. During that time frame, I had recorded 4 of Waka Flocka’s mixtapes and all of the associated artists during that time period. I’ve also as a music producer, produced records and albums with many independent and some major artists as well. In 2019, while working on Tammy Rivera’s album with Waka Flocka as his audio engineer, I was featured on three episodes of season 1 and 1 episode of seasons 2 of their WETV show “Waka and Tammy”. In 2021, I was featured in VH1’s Making Miracles Happen: Behind Miracles on 125th Street by Nick Cannon one of two audio engineers recording the soundtrack of the film. Within the last 20 years creating music, I’ve worked on so much unreleased music with artists that I should write a book of the entertainment industry etiquette and how to move within the business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Its definitely has not been a smooth or easy road. One of the key factors that tend to get in the way of our own success is ourselves and any limited thinking. Also, our personal lives such as making a living or social lives is the number one hinder to a lot of artists, musicians, and creatives in general’s obstacles/challenges.
