Today we’d like to introduce you to Blair Huckeba.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Blair. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Real estate is the only job I’ve ever had. I graduated college during the Great Recession with a degree in journalism at a time when nobody was hiring journalists. I was a waitress and bartender while I tried to figure out my next step. I decided to pursue real estate because I wanted a job where I wouldn’t be chained to a desk from 9-5, where I had unlimited earning potential, and where my income would be directly tied to the amount of effort and work I was willing to put forth. My service-industry background and need-to-please attitude lend itself well to real estate. I began my career in the midst of the real estate crash, but it was a great learning experience and taught me how to really prospect for business. The first two years of my career were extremely difficult and frustrating, but I decided that if I wasn’t going to be the busiest agent, I would be the smartest. So I pored over comps, real estate trends and stats, and became an expert in the neighborhoods in which I wanted to work. I previewed every property on the market that I could, so that I could speak knowledgeably about them… I also focused on growing with just one satisfied client at a time. I figured if each person I helped buy or sell a home referred me to just one person, my business would grow organically. As I built my client base, I started to get more and more referrals, and that’s how I started to really see success.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Real estate is never a smooth road. Every person knows multiple real estate agents, so every day is like a job interview. It can sometimes be hurtful when friends or people you know don’t use you as an agent. I try not to take things personally, and move forward with the attitude that my next amazing client is just around the corner. During slower periods it is always nerve-wracking, and you always wonder where the next deal is coming from. I stress about bettering myself year-over-year. I try to just focus on the service to my clients, and know that if they are satisfied that I have done the best possible job for them, then everything else will fall into place.
The Blair Sells Team with Dorsey Alston Realtors – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the team leader of The Blair Sells Team with Dorsey Alston Realtors. We specialize in residential real estate in Atlanta and the metro-area. I am most proud that, since I started my real estate career of just me, I have been able to start my team and grow my business to over $17 million in sales for 2017. My team strives to provide the highest level of service to all of our clients no matter the price point, and we are known for being extremely detail oriented, thorough, and communicative.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is not about money or awards. I set sales goals and income goals each year, but my happiness or definition of success is not exclusively tied to those goals. Success for me is freedom and balance. I feel successful because I am able to provide a good life for my family while still being a present mother for my kids. Because of the hard work I have put into growing my business, I am able to take vacations with my family, work from home when I want, take my kids to Mommy-and-me classes, and spend the day with my family without asking a boss for time off. Being able to balance being a present parent and wife and still have a thriving business is success to me.
