Today we’d like to introduce you to Blan3 from Writ3rs Block.
Blane, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was introduced to poetry when I was nine years old. It was so critical because it was the same year that my Mother left. It was the only way I could fully express myself. We had a poetry day at school and when I recited my poem I saw the whole mood of the room shift… Right then I knew the power behind my words. I knew that it was more than just a gift, it was a purpose.
From there I fell in love with the “Word of Mouf” album by Ludacris seeing how he could manipulate words to tell a story was amazing to me. I started freestyling with the homies when we were 12 and from there I started hanging out with this dude named Hoodini. Hoodini introduced me to J Dilla, Pete Rock, Big L, Black Star, DMX, and so many other legends. Hoodini was the first person to encourage me to record. My flow was so wack at first but the feeling I got on the mic was something I knew I was built for.
I was never the most naturally talented but I worked harder than everyone around me and I had self-belief. Nothing could stop me. Then Hoodini died. He passed in 2017 which was also the year I lost 4 family members and a mentor. I spiraled into the darkest, brokest, and most depressing period of my life. The only thing that kept me from suicide was knowing that I had a purpose here. I knew I was going through all that pain so that I could relate and help anyone who listened to my music. Hoodini left me with 700 beats…they saved my life.
Skipping over a lot of details in between… May 15th, 2021 I decided exactly what I wanted my life to be like. A month later I met the legend Wendy Day. I was blessed enough for her to bring me on to her team and since then the door to my dreams has been wide open. I met an amazing vocalist named Olivia Zoe and a phenomenal Renaissance-like creator named Mr. Wattson and we formed the trio named Writ3rs Block. We are making music that will change the world of our listeners. Some new age Hippie Movement type ish. The album is coming soon. Too Much to Dream.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Was the path smooth…? shit I played it smooth, but wasn’t nothing smooth about it. So many deaths, abuse, and self-doubt but what came out of it was the most solid foundation that I could ask for. I had to dive in head first to face my fears. I had to get out of my comfort zone. I have to consistently learn and practice what it means to love myself. The key to it all was I never lost hope. I kept my faith.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist and songwriter. What sets me apart is my word choice/lyricism. I have always found a way to connect and work with geniuses and masters of their craft. My greatest skill is the ability to choose who I surround myself with. Iron sharpens Iron. Shoutout everyone I have created with.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The big shifts will be in how the industry incorporates Web3. I think we will see greater use in the true utility of NFT’s. We will see a major shift in how labels operate, they will have to adapt.
What I am most excited for is genuine music. Ya know, shit that really speaks to the soul. The type of music that moves your spirit when you hear it. I hear a lot of that coming from the “underground”. We are about to face some tough times in this country… from the hardest times comes the greatest art.
I also think AI will force humans to rely on their creativity. That’s a long conversation though…
