Today we’d like to introduce you to Akivia Blue.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been a stickler for perfecting my craft. Though I was quiet and soft-spoken as a little girl that never stopped me from fulfilling my dreams. At the age of 12, I found doing hair to be a suitable way of making money. Eight years later, I realized that it wasn’t just a phase. It was something that I ambitiously sought out to do. When I discovered my ability to make others feel beautiful and look beautiful, I knew there was no turning back from this feeling of satisfaction. I had a hard decision to make concerning my future; As expected, I went off to college and majored in Biology to become a Physical Therapist. I completed 62 credits in this major. As time progressed, an overwhelming amount of emotions pushed me into frantic mode. I yielded to my true purpose and changed my major to Business Marketing. I always knew that I would be an entrepreneur. So, limiting myself to one stream of income was not an option.
I’d put in so much time doing something that was of little interest or importance to me. If I could be honest, I was worried about who would be disappointed in my decision. Finally, I conjured up enough nerve to tell my family. My mom was very supportive and agreed that I follow my passion; although, she discussed the odds that I would be faced with as an entrepreneur; whereas others were disappointed and convinced I had made the wrong decision and was not enough in order to be successful. Needless to say, I am currently working in Atlanta, Georgia. I now have my own suite and business, The Blue Hair Palace. I also have a hair extension line that is available for purchase through my website, www.thebluehairpalace.com.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have encountered some of the most intriguing and challenging moments throughout this transition. After doing hair for a while in my hometown, I knew it was time to expand my brand elsewhere to share my talent with the world. I started off doing hair for as low as $35. By the time I reached high school people were paying me up to $80. My move to Atlanta helped me reach an advanced stage in my life. I have always been humble with my prices but I knew my business was all I had to rely on. I had to think of ways to reintroduce myself to a new region. I visited surrounding hair stores in Atlanta to develop new relationships. I left business cards to attain potential clients. I even came up with creative ideas to increase residual income while making this changeover. The process turned into a fun and exciting expedition. Not to mention my Full lace wig collection I created and launched. Turns out this was favorable for me because it took me out of my comfort zone and revealed some amazing qualities to help manifest my dream.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Blue Hair Palace – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
My business has grown tremendously. When I first began this journey, braids is where it all started. I have gradually grown out of that. Now I specialize in frontal sew ins, closure sew ins, quick weaves, units, coloring, etc. I’ve even implemented group classes and one on one classes on how to apply lace frontals and closures. I have never been afraid to spread and share my knowledge and talents with other people. Knowing someone has the same dream as I do and also knowing that some people don’t look at it as a big accomplishment, it’s a must I push other people to turn our dream into reality. I feel that is what sets me apart from others. Most people are always in competition and try to bring people down so that they can just win. I believe in seeing everybody win.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I love about this city is that there are so many opportunities that you can easily take advantage of and master. There are also so many people that live here that you run across that helps you network and get yourself out there. Actually, that is how this opportunity presented itself to me. A returning client that I’ve had since I moved here that goes by the name of Danielle Du’Bose referred me, and I really appreciate her for that. so with that being said, there’s not much I dislike about this city.
