Meet Boluwasefe Adelugba

Today we’d like to introduce you to Boluwasefe Adelugba.

Boluwasefe, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My mother permed my older sister’s hair but decided to leave my hair natural and was unsure how to style it. I decided to take my hair into my own hands when I was around 12 years old. I’ve been doing natural hair for at least three years now. It has taken three years for me to be comfortable and proud of my curls and kinks.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. When I was younger, I was bullied a lot for my hair, skin color, ethnicity, etc. Sometimes those rude comments can distract me from loving my hair and social media can too. Recently, I’m finally seeing hair that looks like me in the media. I use to want hair like others and get upset when my hair doesn’t curve or curl like others.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
My brand is just beginning. I started a YouTube channel in August but started posting hair videos on Instagram around late May. My YouTube channel is a mix of lifestyle, vlog, and natural hair videos. My hair videos are how – to 15- 60 seconds videos of type 4 natural hair. My personality is the only thing that can set me apart from others because thousands of people are doing the same thing as me. I would describe myself as goofy and funny when it comes to my personality. The most thing I’m proud of as a brand is the people I’ve reached when people tell me they laughed or achieve a hairstyle because of me it truly makes me proud of the work and effort I put into my videos.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory of my childhood is when I went to London as an eight-year-old for my Auntie’s wedding. It was my first time on a plane and going outside of America. I got to see a whole new world and still today I realize differences from here to London that I didn’t know when I was eight years old.
