Today we’d like to introduce you to Bonnie Heath.

Bonnie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I enrolled in a basic black and white photo class in college, I was hooked. I loved the creative freedom of capturing beautiful images with a camera. While finishing my degree in architecture, I took every photography class North Carolina State offered. Moving toward a career with a camera, I attended graduate school at Ohio University to study photojournalism. While I worked as a newspaper photographer for several years, I dreamt of running my own business.

I continued to work as a photographer for over a decade, but I was always “working for the man.” It wasn’t until my husband and I adopted our son Sebastian that I made a break from corporate life to pursue my freelance photography full time.

Since the inception of my business, I’ve photographed hundreds of weddings and documented other important steps in a family’s life… pregnancies, first birthdays, mitzvahs, graduations, marriage proposals, and reunions.

Portraits are my current passion. Helping my clients feel beautiful and strong through photography is an experience I hope to continue through the rest of my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
Figuring out how to run a small business has been a challenge from the beginning. Marketing, social media, accounting, computer tech… as a small business owner you wear a lot of hats! Over the years, I’ve found some tools that help me with business workflow and I’ve learned that I need to outsource some work that I don’t enjoy.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bonnie J Heath Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
When I first started freelancing, I would take any kind of job that would come my way. Baby photography, weddings, family photos… I did it all. A few years ago, I started narrowing down to the work that I really wanted. Portraits are my passion. I love working one-on-one with a client and helping them become comfortable with having their portrait made.

My experience is one of the things that sets my business apart from others. There are not many working photographers who started their careers shooting film.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Atlanta is an amazing city for work and play. It’s an affordable place to live and there are many fun things to do in this city. I also love the diversity in Atlanta. Because my husband and I adopted a little one from China, we are always looking for ways to explore neighborhoods and activities that celebrate different cultures. On any weekend, we might be going to get bubble tea on Buford Highway or eating noodles at a Taiwanese restaurant.
