Meet Bosco of Yobosco in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bosco.

Bosco, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always been in music. And that was because of the influence that my mother gave me from her love of music. When I was younger, I played many instruments like guitar, piano, drums, trumpet, and an assortment of many other instruments. My favorite were the drums though. I feel as if drums move the soul. Drums coexist with your heartbeat and your heartbeat is the natural rhythm in your body. The beat of all music attracts me. So when I first heard hip hop, around the 4th or 5th grade, I was an excited newcomer to a new culture. I became a huge hip hop fan, listening daily. Studying the music while having an old soul I decided to start making music on my own. I became a rapper. I always knew everyone in Atlanta so when it came down to start this new career, while still in high school, I knew every person I needed to contact and get in touch with. I started going to the studio every weekend. Dropping songs constantly and shooting videos to those songs. I promoted throughout my school and through an organization, I was apart of called Fresh Empire. I was a full-time artist for about a year had a couple of song to do great numbers. But for some reason, I wasn’t satisfied. The game was over-saturated and I wasn’t where I thought I needed to be. So I slowed down on making music. Just to look for what it was I would do.

So as I stated before I was apart of Fresh Empire. Fresh Empire is a national, government-sponsored, campaign to end teenage tobacco use. The main demographic is the hip hop community. So we did all kind of parties, concerts, and events. With those parties we always had dj’s and one dj’s name was Dj Jason Blaze. Whenever he dj’d I would come to the booth and watch him, and I would always be very intrigued. It got to a point where he would let me try stuff and eventually start spinning like a five song set. I started to really enjoy it and wanted to do it more and more. So I did. I expressed my feelings about it to my mother. And without me even asking she purchased me a board (Pioneer DDJ SB3). And I started learning: teaching myself, learning from others, and learning from youtube. Just any way to become great. I took about a year to just try to learn the craft and get as good as possible before I came to the public with this newfound talent. I worked and I studied and a year later I was ready. I threw my first party. It was called summer bash. I had horrible luck. The day of my first party it thunder-stormed. About 40 people came out and we still had a good time. I lost about $200 from the unfortunate turnout of that party. So a month later I decided to throw another party and it happens again. It thunderstorms but this time worse than the first. At this party just about no one came. Meaning I took a loss of around $600. That’s when I saw that I needed to build a bigger network.

So I just worked hard on getting booked and with those booking more people heard me and the word started to get out. I had more and more people booking for parties. So I started moving. And moving fast. So fast that I started to get plugged in to different clubs. Once I started Dj’ing at the club things started to move even faster. Now just being a year into showing my talents to the world I have residency’s at some of the biggest clubs in the city. I dj at Oak Brunch on Sunday’s, Alibi every Monday, Cru most Thursday’s, and Opium some Saturday’s. And I have so much more to come. Many people ask how I elevated so quickly or how I did it at such a young age. I just turned 20 and all I can say is that I was destined for it. My next big goal is to go on tour and I am waiting on my time but if it is coming soon. I plan to be the biggest in my field by 23. So everyone makes way. I have to give the biggest shoutouts to my loving and supportive Mother and Nia Mitchell, who is the best person I could have ever had anything to do with.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had many obstacles including self-doubt and being unable to see my own purpose. Also procrastination. I procrastinate a lot and that one thing I need to get out of.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My Mother and the rest of my family. Also Dj Dos Dias, Dj Tarxan, Swerve as a mentor and big brother  and all other dj’s and promoters that have helped me grow.
