Meet DaKenya Dixon of The Boujee Brand in Southwest Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to DaKenya Dixon.

DaKenya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I’ve always been a High Maintenance/Expensive person. I’ve also always had HIGH expectations in life for myself. One thing didn’t change though was my determination to own my passion. I grew up the youngest of three; Laerica R, Khristopher D, & Me (DaKenya Dixon). I saw the definition of determination, purpose, & business watching my parents (Ora D and Antoine D) and my grandparents (Sherry S and Robert S) spend every day working towards their passion and goals. It hasn’t always been easy, but I believe that builds character and it’s built a BEAST.

Needless to say, that laid down the foundation. Now, I like to say that creativity and determination run through my veins because no matter how the situation looks if it’s something I’m set on, I’m going to get it done. I like to refer to myself as a Jack of All Trades because over my four years of entrepreneurship I have done business as: a self-taught to a trained cosmetologist, self-taught lash tech, self-taught makeup artist, self-taught seamstress, self-taught businesswoman, and a designer. The Boujee Brand formerly known as Posh Royal Bundles underwent a total flip when I switched from hair to lingerie.

In 2015, at the age of 16, I started the process of starting my own business. Something I can call my own that I knew would not only provide for my family and me but allow for me to follow my passion while not having to answer to someone else. I lost my cousin later that year and because she was such an influence to me I dedicated my business to her. The following year, I launched Posh Royal Bundles a virgin hair supplier. I didn’t know a lot about business at the time because I’ve always been an “I’ll teach myself” or “there’s a lesson in everything” type of person.

My brother created my first logo and I stuck with that up until his death in 2017. My brother was very influential in my passions because we were soo close in age and no matter what art was the life he wanted to live. After his death, I decided that I wanted to revamp my whole business and embrace a part of me that I never showed. Thus, The Boujee Brand was born and in 2018, we started our transition from beauty to fashion. As you can imagine, that is an extreme leap especially with no formal training, but me being me, I wasn’t going to let that stop me.

As we fast forward to this point in 2019, I have been to college(SUBR), being a stripper(respect because babyyyyyy), and cosmetology school(PM). I’ve even done the 9-5, left, and went back to make sure it wasn’t for me(it wasn’t). The only thing that continues to withstand is my passion. Currently, The Boujee Brand is a small business, but I plan on making it one of the most successful Young Black Female Owned Brands worldwide. I want to pave the way for my nieces and all the other little black girls that don’t think they can leave their mark on the world.

On August 24, 2019, The Boujee Brand will be holding it’s FIRST fashion show that includes things that have NEVER been done before in fashion show history. You should come to see the show!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No! Not all the time, lol, but I wouldn’t expect it to be. I’ve cried, cheered, laughed, been depressed, and every other emotion you can feel. When God places you in a position like this, you have to know that you’re going to have to come in full armor ready to go. For example, just last year, I lost out on $1500 and $1500 worth of product due to a customer/scammer all within seven days. I allowed myself to ball my eyes out for 15-30min., then I got it together. Business isn’t for the weak, it’ll knock the wind out of you sometimes.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
The Boujee Brand is a slow fashion home-based online lingerie and adult line. We specialize in sizes XS-4X and don’t discriminate when it comes to design. I am proud that my company is able to show a woman of all sizes that they are beautiful and can wear whatever they please. What sets us apart is our quality, customer service, and our ethically sourced products.

My boyfriend Aaron is currently also big support in my business and life. I can say it’s times I’ve wanted to throw in the towel and he continued to motivate me.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I think my family and I can agree that I was spoiled, an introvert, shy, intelligent, creative, and curious. I was that kid always reading a book or always inside unless there were too many people.
