Today we’d like to introduce you to Boyd Baker.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Grew up in the South. Love the South. Don’t love how others characterize us as backwoods racist. Wanted to create a live show that highlights all the incredible talent that’s grown in the South.
Kickstarter friends helped me put together my first show at Agnes Scott with three musical acts, improv comedy, poetry, storyteller, and a do-gooder. Since then I’ve done nine more and almost 100 podcasts to help spread the good Southern gospel.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anytime you gather musicians, artists, and changemakers it’s going to be a wild ride. Add to that trying to find venues that get I’m trying to build a signature event for Atlanta like A Prairie Home Companion, and it can be quite challenging.
With all the amazing events, festivals, and live performances in Atlanta, it can be tough to get the word out. Marketing without a big budget demands creativity. That’s probably the biggest challenge I have – building an audience – but we keep doing it one show at a time.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Community Arts Live is the non-profit that puts on the Good Gracious Show. My goal is to connect the community with the arts to develop more pride in the South. I like to help folks discover talent as good as anywhere in the country, and have an amazing night out that’s full of surprises.
I’m most proud of the folks I’ve been able to put on stage over the past 3 years and the audiences I’ve gathered. Each Good Gracious is a unique, all-ages show. There’s nobody putting on performances that span the arts and are guaranteed to entertain like us.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the BEST place for anyone wanting to start a creative project. The energy and enthusiasm around Atlanta is infectious. This is a town where just about anything is possible.
We can always improve and I have faith that we will focus more on our arts community. I would love for the local government to put more support into creating vibrant arts areas around town. Besides affordable housing for artists, performance venues, rehearsal spaces, and showcases for budding talent.
