Meet Brad Daniell of Daniell Tutoring Services in Dunwoody

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Daniell.

Brad, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
About five years ago, my wife Rebekah and I moved to Dunwoody. We had significant student loan debt and a house that needed upkeep. Based on the recommendation of a student’s parent, we decided to offer a summer tutoring program. This program would review information from the previous year, but also preview topics in preparation for the next year of school. We started small at first, offering only a ninth grade biology review. At the end of the first summer, we had made enough money to pay off one student loan in full, a great success. However, we still had a mountain of debt to climb out of, so we aimed to grow the business. Through increased advertising and word of mouth, our attendance increased to 80 students the second year. At the end of that summer, we had enough to pay off all of my wife’s student loans and half of mine. We had almost reached our goal. Over the next year, we started writing curricula for chemistry and physics with a co-worker helping write and teach the algebra and geometry classes. I felt like we were finally able to expand the business since we had built a good reputation in our community. Last summer was incredibly successful, with over 100 students in attendance. This success allowed us to pay off the remainder of my student loans. Now, in addition to the previously mentioned classes, we offer AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Biology, all AP math classes, and an ACT/SAT review.

Looking to the future, we look forward to helping students become stronger academically and more confident in their abilities. What started as a way to get out of debt has turned into a rewarding experience and a business of our own.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road hasn’t necessarily been smooth, but that’s to be expected with any small business. Our largest struggle has been balancing each student and their family’s summer schedule to make classes work. Since each family takes a vacation in addition to various summer camps, it is a challenge to find times for students to meet. My wife is very detail-oriented, so we have a better handle on the schedule now, but at first, it was our biggest struggle. It also can be difficult to balance two full time jobs with our tutoring. While we do have more time in the summer, weekdays during the school year are quite busy!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Daniell Tutoring Services is a one-stop shop for a family’s tutoring needs. My wife and I are passionate about education and seek to demonstrate that through our meetings with students. We are known for our summer preparatory courses, which aim to instill confidence in a student as they begin a new school year. However, some parents prefer their student to review course information from the year before, so we adjust to the individual needs of the student. Either way provides students with a firm foundation entering next year’s class. The courses we offer in the summer are a review or preview of any high school science and math class, including AP courses. Additionally, we offer ACT/SAT prep. All of these classes occur in a small group setting typically no larger than five students. Usually, a group of students will sign up together so they can come to class in their own group. However, we have some students that are independent and end up making new friends before beginning high school or their next year’s classes.

In addition to our summer classes, we tutor a variety of subjects during the semester, covering courses from elementary to high school. We also offer test prep sessions for our students before a big test in their class. This helps students feel confident going into their test and, because of this, perform better than they would have otherwise.

Something new we started this year are AP test review classes. These three-hour classes occur on Saturdays and Sundays in April. As previously mentioned, we offer them for AP math and science classes, but also for AP History classes.

As a company, we are most proud of our ability to positively impact a student’s academic life. Students that participate in our programs, or tutor with us during the semester achieve success and feel more confident in the classroom. A moment of immense pride comes when we see that student walk across stage and receive their diploma, showing that four years of hard work paid off. Knowing that student reached their dreams with our help is a moment of great honor for us.

We believe what sets us apart is our summer tutoring. We have not seen another company that offers such a diverse curriculum in the summer. The programs we look at are a review of a student’s previous class for a very reasonable price. We do not feel the need to charge an egregious price because we enjoy helping students achieve their potential.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was interested in sports and science. I started playing soccer at an early age and grew into football in high school. Always curious about nature, I began to question the natural world around me as I grew older, which developed into a deep passion for science. Throughout high school, I excelled in my science classes, so I decided to pursue it further in college. Medical school proved to be too expensive, so my next choice was to become a teacher. I always enjoyed sharing my passion for science, so in my opinion there was no better platform to do that than through teaching. Now, everyday, I am incredibly humbled to be able to share my love of science with students.
