Meet Branden Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Branden Adams.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My passion started with a disposable camera and a fifth-grade field trip. I remember wanting every photo to be perfect given I had a limited number that could be taken. I made every effort to ensure every shot was perfectly composed and cropped. After getting the photos developed, my family and I knew I had a natural talent. For several years after, I would play with a regular point-and-shoot camera until one day, I got the opportunity to use my first professional grade equipment a DSLR owned by the high school yearbook. After learning so much so quickly, I invested in my own camera, and after several years of molding my craft, here we are. You see, I was always able to observe how beautiful the world is, and then one day I learned I could capture that beauty and share it. I learned I could capture a memory in a frame to be relived over and over again. Since then, I’ve been on a journey to grow, learn, and create as much as I can!

Please tell us about your art.
When you break the word photography down, you get the Greek roots “phōs”& “graphé”, which together mean “drawing with light.” I think that is the perfect description of what I do. I love shooting with an off-camera flash and being able to control the scene no matter where that scene may be. I find dynamic lighting and especially the addition of color can create an atmosphere that didn’t exist before. Where one might see an old record store, I see decades of passion, I see red. Where one may see a street lamp illuminated only by its own light, I see loneliness, I see blue. I love having the knowledge and ability to add that color on the scene and being able to create an authentic image in an unconventional environment. I think being able to control those simple elements of a scene can boost the emotional response someone viewing might experience. What I hope is for people to have that same feeling when viewing my work and for them to be inspired to create with whatever they have available.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I think success is ultimately self-determined. My idea of success is meeting the goals you set for yourself, big or small. Success is pushing yourself and growing. Success is being able to look back and see progress. As an artist, I think self-disciple is the biggest key to that. We don’t punch in and have a schedule to complete every week; we decide that for ourselves. When you’re your own boss, you’re the only one who can hold yourself accountable to what you need to do, and even then, only you know what that  is. Self-discipline is the practice of checking yourself like a manager or boss might check you; why are you on your phone when you’re supposed to be working? If you’re an artist and have a hard time doing that, I suggest you learn how or find a mentor/coach. Self-discipline is like any skill and can be molded or improved.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have a website that showcases all my work and a blog I plan on launching soon, but my favorite platform at the moment is Instagram. You can find me on almost any app or social media, but I always make sure to keep my Instagram updated. A platform built to share photos is definitely a great tool for a photographer. As far as support goes, I think every artist just wants anyone who views their work to appreciate it, so anything as small as an acknowledgment can go a long way. My favorite form of that comes when people share my work. The notion of “I enjoyed this so much I want others to see it” is gratifying and definitely makes me feel great.
