Meet Brandon Dion Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Dion Williams.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My journey began as a photographer shortly after my discharge from the military. I received a photographer’s position at a retail portrait studio in my hometown (Florence, South Carolina). As a rookie in photography, I had no clue I was embarking upon a very pivotal milestone that would enhance my life. Once I started working there, it didn’t take long to discover that I had a photographer’s “eye” nor was it surprising. As a child, I was always into art and I would often sketch models from various magazines that were lying around the house; focusing on how light falls on them and the details in their features. Little did I know those intricate details would have such an impact in photography.

My time there ended abruptly when the company closed their studios; however, the company’s closure gave me the drive I needed to create my own photography business. In 2007, Apple Inc. launched their first iPhone. I remember thinking the “i” in iPhone stood out because it was different and catchy. So, I adopted it into my brand’s name – iForte Photography (sorry Apple). The “I” (a related homophone of “eye”) represented me. Forte is defined as one’s strong point and I considered mine to be my “eye” in photography. I kept the name (iForte) until 2016, but as time progressed, my work evolved and I wanted a more exclusive name. So I decided to name my brand after myself – Brandon Dion.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and No. Are you familiar with the idiom “Fell into my lap”? Well, my first camera along with other vital equipment were literally handed to me… I’m not kidding. Not only that, I’ve made effortless and lasting relationships with great photographers who I admire. I knew it was God looking out for me. Nevertheless, I’ve had my share of financial issues, but I can honestly say my photography business has pulled me out of a lot of financial debt. The main struggles I’ve dealt with were my insecurities. Sometimes your mind will have you questioning yourself and your worth. Eventually, you’ll begin doubting yourself. That’s the perfect time to surround yourself with people who believe in you. That helped me so much. Thanks to my family and friends for being there… I love you.

Brandon Dion Portraits – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have two phenomenal brands: Brandon Dion Portraits & Brandon Dion Photography. Brandon Dion Portraits specializes in family, fashion, headshots, and weddings whereas the other brand specializes in beauty and fitness. I’m mostly known for my fashion and fitness work. You may have run across a few images that were featured in various magazines from Atlanta GA to Dallas TX. In October of 2017, my work was featured in ESSENCE. That was an incredible moment for me… kind of like this interview!

I can’t pinpoint what sets me apart from any other passionate photographer. If anything, our methods would meet in some way or form. I can’t stress enough that I don’t take my gift as a photographer lightly. I love what I do and my sense of obligation to ensure I’ve met the needs of my clients.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My idea of success is finding your passion and executing it to its full capacity. In the near future, I plan to expand my knowledge to learn cinematography. I encourage everyone to invest in his or her dreams, learn the lesson from your mistakes, and don’t be afraid to fail because only through failure do you learn to succeed.
