Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Williams.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From the time I was born, sports has always been a passion of mine. I was afforded the opportunity to attend Tennessee State University as a preferred walk-on where I earned a full athletic football scholarship. I studied Human Performance and Sports Science with a concentration in Exercise Science. Right after I graduated, I pursued my life long dream to become a professional football player but fell short of that. Discouraged to say the least, I was still determined to be successful in the Sports industry. I went back to my alma-mater where I received my Masters in Sports Administration and worked in football and basketball operations. There, I continued to build relationships with several NFL and NBA teams as they came to scout players. By the grace of God, I got a call from Matthew Hand of the Buffalo Bills, offering me a two year internship in the Player Development and Football Administration; of course I accepted!
During my time there, my job responsibilities were to oversee the rookie transition program in player development, assist the scouting department with multiple scouting projects, and to manage the training camp logistics. In 2010, the NFL lockout started and my position was being eliminated. I went back to Nashville and began to train professional athletes at D1 Sports Training facility. There, I met the founder of TBH Global Asset Management and he saw my passion for working with the professional athletes and how they gravitated towards me. He invited me to lunch and asked me to start his sports division. From there, it was history. I later moved to Atlanta, GA and began to build the TBH Sports empire.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road. Being new to the financial industry, my peers knew me as the athlete and the guy with the personality, so the transition from being a player to being the player’s financial advisor/business manager was definitely a struggle mentally and emotionally. In 2010, it took one player, Joique Bell, who was also one of my rookies during my time in Buffalo, to give me a shot to manage his finances. As an African American male in a prodominately Caucasian industry, I was always faced with new challenges. I was told “no” more than anyone could imagine. It was my determination that helped me get through. Of course there were times when I was down and out but I have a beautiful daughter that I know that I have to grind for daily! I continued receiving those “No’s” but soon started getting many “Yes’s” and today, I have 30 plus athletes signed to TBH Sports, both current and retired.
TBH Sports – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
TBH Sports is a division of TBH Global Asset Management, LLC, a fee-only U.S Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) registered investment advisory firm. According to a 2009 article, 78% of NFL players are either bankrupt or are under financial stress within two years of retirement and 60% of NBA players go bankrupt within five years after leaving the sport. So you ask what do I do? Simply put – I make sure these Athletes don’t become a statistic. I’m most proud to be a critical part of the healthy living lifestyles that these players are able to transition to after their professional careers come to an end.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is everything that you make it. Success is being able to reach one goal, small or large. I feel that you can reach success multiple times throughout your life. For myself personally, I don’t think I’ve reach my ultimate goal of success. I have so much more to give, so much more to do, and so many more lives to impact. However, I am grateful and humble for all of my experiences.
