Today we’d like to introduce you to Bre Johnson.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Two years ago, I wanted to go on a mission trip. As most know, mission trips cost thousands of dollars, but I still wanted to. I told my mom to save $500 dollars and I would pull $1,000 from my savings and from there all I had to so was sell about 55 shirts and the trip would be paid for. I was hoping I could sale at least 55.
Little did I know after only three weeks the entire trip was paid for. Once I returned several people began telling stories about how inspired they were, how wearing the shirts turned their day around or how many people asked about them. As soon as I was ready to shut everything down more orders started to pour in.
Please tell us about your art.
I have my own clothing brand, BOOK67. It’s the notion that there are 66 books in the bible and we are to live as the 67th. We are to spread love and be a light in the world we live in.
After the mission trip I mentioned earlier, I began to feel this calling. Use these shirts and this message to help people in need of a small financial blessing from school supplies and uniforms to college applications.
Once I started gaining support from all across the world, I realized this brand is bigger than me. I want to inspire people around me to grab their dreams by the neck and never let go. I love creating, building and innovating. So, I am now obtaining my masters in Information Systems. Computer technology is a great industry that allows me to bridge the gap between business, STEM and young black and brown people.
My overall message to people is to believe in themselves. Take risks, fail and learn from your mistakes. Running a business is much easier that way.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Don’t let money be the reason you don’t make money. CREATE, BUILD and be smart the money will come. As long as you are making money to make a difference and not driven by money alone people will support a well-articulated vision.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
