Meet Brea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brea.

Brea, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in California, raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan and have now been living in Atlanta, GA for several years. I received my Bachelor of Communications from Grand Valley State University with a concentration in Sociology as well as taking courses outside of college in performing arts. Shortly after that, I moved to Atlanta, GA. Before I moved to Atlanta, I was already working and booking modeling and acting gigs in Detroit, New York and Atlanta. One of the first publications I booked was the 1st Atlanta Dymes Calendars created by Randal Dunn. After booking a few other magazine publications, I always wanted to host a Music Television show due to my love for the music industry and acting. I seriously started manifesting this dream job of mine in between working in the corporate world as a Recruiter in the marketing and Power/Utility industry. I was soon contacted by WHTV from my modeling website at the time and was asked to audition to be a TV host for the show. I went on to host “What’z Happenin TV” created by Rodney Lundy on the previous UPN Network for a few years. We interviewed celebrities and introduced the top 10 music videos. The show came on weekly. Some of my notable interviews included “Michael Mauldin” (Jermaine Dupri’s Dad) Actor; Joe Torry, Artist; Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, Actor; Shemar Moore, Actress: Lisa Raye, Rapper; Scarface, Entertainer; Rapper; Pastor Troy, Fonzworth Bentley, Radio Personality; Rickey Smiley, Record Producer; Jazze Pha and much, much more. I went on to act in a few short films and host a few other events and film shows. As of 2019, I was asked to come on as a Weather girl for the online Music radio show Hot97 Media (Hot 97 Media – Believe The Hype) I cover the New York, Dallas, TX and Atlanta Georgia markets. I also do a fun facts segment after the weather to bring awareness to black history, women rights and just fun facts in general on Fridays for The Midday Mix Show with DJ Polo and Sean Swift. While still working as a Recruiter, I created a part time staffing agency initially created to help people who are transitioning from the world of entertainment to the corporate world, called “Bizzy Bee Consultant”! My mom came up with this name for me because she said I am always busy doing something.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. I didn’t have a mentor or anyone to show me the way and didn’t know very many people who were in the entertainment industry, so I had to make a lot of mistakes and learn things the hard way. Most people I knew worked a 9 to 5 and when some found out my passion, I would mainly hear negative comments but I did have a few people in my life who continued to believe in my vision. I traveled to California while in College to try out as a host for BET’s music TV host Auditions but quickly learned my look was a dime a dozen and so this did me literally no favors at all. I also realized in life period it was all about who you knew, and if you don’t know anybody relevant, then it is going to be a tough road ahead. Plus, even if you do know somebody, most aren’t willing to help unless you have a good relationship with them. Once I did start landing relevant work, (mainly local commercials & short films) I started meeting some amazing people who would eventually become a good friend or throw some helpful advice my way but trust me when I say those people are few and far between. I can now say I have a small group of people who I will throw them work and vice versa, so that is a blessing!

Please tell us about your work.
Recruiter/Actress/Weather girl as well as owning a part time staffing agency called “Bizzy Bee Consultant, LLC” that I started two years ago. Being in the entertainment industry, most people have another job to pay the bills or keep them afloat. Since I have been in the recruiting industry for so long, I started having many of my family and friends come to me and ask me to help them find a job or put together a resume. Then they started recommending their friends and family to me for help as well. So I decided to create a business out of what I have already been doing for other companies for many years. These are mainly people who were moving from another state to Atlanta and needed help finding jobs. My company helps with this process. Most people need help especially when relocating to a different state. I am most proud of the fact that I help people provide for their family and love receiving emails or phone calls of appreciation. I love to hear someone tell me that the resume I created or helped them with, got them that job they so desperately needed. When I first came to Atlanta, I didn’t know how to get a job myself. I started going through staffing agencies to find my first job in Atlanta and realized those recruiters made great money helping others find work. I thought to myself that I would be great at that and landed my first recruiter position several years later in between my entertainment work and the rest was history. I have been where the job seeker is, so now that I am on the other side of the coin, I know how to deal with the candidate and don’t treat them like just another number. Another aspect of my company most recently is working with the non profit organization “Descendants of the truth 501c” where I am the Program Manager representing the Southern region with exciting things to come. Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Favorite time in my childhood was when my brother and I would go over my Grandparents’ house in Grand Ledge, MI. They had a lot of land, we were free to run around on the property, we had lots of freedom, riding bikes, running around, playing around the pond, camping with our Aunt, lots of trees and dirt roads. We would pick blue berries, play in tree houses, etc. This allowed our imagination to run wild and we had lots of playtime and felt very free during that time of our lives. I was always surrounded by my Grand parents, Aunts, Uncles and cousins. Great memories.
