Meet Brea Retic of Brea J Cuts in Marietta and Kennesaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brea Retic.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Atlanta from Indianapolis, IN, when I lost my job in January 2009. I wanted a new start and decided to take control of my future and my livelihood. My grandmother was living here at the time, and she allowed my son and me to stay with her. I began barber school that August at Roffler-Moler hairstyling college in Marietta. It was important to me that my career had flexibility with time, allowing me to be fully present for my son, and financially secure.

Barbering was a natural fit for me since I enjoy working with people and having the opportunity to make a positive impact on those around me every day. I joined the team at Barbers 4 Days in 2010, and four years later transitioned into a management role. It is important to me to be the best barber that I can be, so I consistently attend hair shows, take multiple classes a year, and participate in educational and networking events to improve my craft in an industry that is constantly evolving.

Has it been a smooth road?
NO! It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I first started cutting hair, I lacked confidence in my work. It was an area I had to diligently work on. I would make time to watch Youtube and learn from other barbers I looked up to. I was constantly seeking mentors and would carefully study their cutting techniques. This industry is also known to be “male-dominated”- I remember having male clients come into the shop and refuse to sit in my chair, simply because I am a female. At first, it bothered me, but ultimately resulted in motivation and pushed me to go even harder.

I wanted to be the barber that gave you the haircut you remember forever. Starting out in this industry requires marketing and self-promotion. I was always (and still am) passing out cards, in the shop from open til close, and making sure I am consistent in going above and beyond for every single client. There were some days I waited in the shop from open to close, with a completely empty book. I would question if this was really what I wanted- or if I should give up and go get another 9-5 job again. But I stuck with it. I continued to focus on the end goal and my dreams. Giving up just wasn’t an option.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Brea J Cuts – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My specialty is great haircuts, amazing customer service, and I pride myself on cultivating long-lasting relationships with each of my clients. The most valuable compliment is a referral. I am also extremely proud of my team, that has become more like family, and the opportunity I’ve been given to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Never underestimate the power of a great haircut or a barbershop conversation. I always strive to give back whenever I can, and I am a co-founder of a project centered around providing haircuts in a curated environment for clients with special needs and sensory challenges.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like most about Atlanta, is that it is extremely diverse. Its a huge melting pot of culture. Also, Atlanta is a city of dreams, entrepreneurship and opportunity. Come here with determination and work ethic, and you have the ability to develop your career and achieve anything you put your mind to. Traffic is probably what I enjoy the least.
