Today we’d like to introduce you to Breeze Hu.
Hi Breeze, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Baltimore-based comic artist, illustrator, and storyteller. I’m currently taking my illustration MFA at the Maryland Institute of Art.
Before coming to Baltimore, I worked as an illustrator and designer for a social company, advancing social change by giving voice to grassroots and telling their stories. At other times I do children’s books and personal comics. I care about human emotions, especially family relationships and the relationship between people and their hometowns.
Even though I began to do art in a very early year, I hadn’t considered making it a career until I was seriously ill at 13.
During my hospitalization, I had to think about my future and what I would most like to do if I spent the rest of my life in a hospital bed. I found art as my shelter, meditation, and my passion. After leaving the hospital, I decided to pass on the energy I got from art.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it was a smooth road, but I was fortunate to have the help and support of family and friends along the way, so I didn’t have too many worries about the finances that I needed to worry about the most.
I’m struggling more with my choice of career direction and how to balance life and work. I have almost no personal life.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
AI artists are definitely an important shock to the industry, requiring artists to focus more on creativity and think about originality. But I still have confidence in the artists.
I see AI artists as the impact of 20th-century photography technology on traditional painting. In the next 5-10 years, some artists may be forced to transform, but those who remain can make the art world more vital. Moreover, I think AI art itself has its own potential as new media art, and I am looking forward to its subsequent development.
