Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Phillips.
Brenda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up where poverty, drug abuse and trauma seemed normal I looked to create a solution knowing there are youth out there who are experiencing similar circumstances, I wanted to offer a safe space and create educational and recreational opportunities to expose youth to anything outside of their normal environment. I went to create my nonprofit WECARE. By creating WECARE it has lead to multiple opportunities for me to study trauma-informed care and social and emotional learning. People started to hear about my work and from there, I started to create curriculums, workshops and large presentations for school districts. I speak, perform, curate multiple events. Over the past nine years, I’ve been blessed to speak to over 50.000 people, curate College tours, community days, prom giveaways, amusement parks and the list is endless. During this time, COVID hit interrupting what we all knew as a normal from their birthed my newest baby BInspired an empowerment apparel brand created to inspire you and everyone you come in contact with. My purpose is to inspire people and spread love. I am blessed to be doing so. My words will change the WORLD.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. People don’t see the tears, the moment where quitting seems like a real option. The moments of self-doubt but believing in yourself is the best blessing you could ever give yourself. We are each given something that is bigger than us. We have to re-navigate our hearts and minds to that and for me, that’s what usually helps me get through and to also offer myself some grace and reflect on all the other accomplishments.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a youth development specialist with a gift to speak and perform spoken word. I incorporate my spoken word inside my speeches which sets me apart from a lot of speakers and my experience of life has given me the ability to be relatable to so many people. On top of that, my amazing clothing brand BInspired. It sounds like I’m bragging about myself and I hate it, lol but wow, I’m really blessed to get to do what I love. I’m best known for my WORDS & the love and passion I have for youth
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I’m living it. I have done more than anyone in my family. Coming from generational trauma of poverty, sexual abuse and drugs, I am changing the narrative of my family. I’m just getting started but this is success. Having someone like you guys reach out to learn more about me. This is success. My heart is full. I am grateful and truly humbled.
