Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Carson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2010, I was laid off after 20 years with a global communications company. I then decided to follow my passion for cooking, and enrolled in culinary school. I entered the program with a disdain for baking, but ironically, I fell in love with the craft of pie. Then in 2012, before deploying with the Army National Guard, my husband gave me a gift that would change our lives forever: a kitchen stocked with professional pie-making tools. He encouraged me to pursue my dream of sharing my pies with the world and Crave Pie Studio came to fruition.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting a business is kind of similar to having a baby. You give birth to your dream and then it consumes every waking moment of your time. But like a beloved child, the passion you feel for the business helps to fuel the sleepless nights. It is not always easy, and in the early stage it was exhausting. There is always something new to learn and I’ve made plenty of mistakes. Because I love what I do and believe in the mission, I wake up every day excited to go to work.
Crave Pie Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Crave Pie Studio is an artisan pie bakery that specializes in mini pies, made with fresh seasonal ingredients. We are known for our exceptional all butter flaky pie crust, and creative recipes. We offer a variety of fresh baked individual sized pies each day, and bake full size pies by custom order. By offering mini pies, our customers can enjoy a little treat for themselves without having to buy a large pie, and can also buy a variety of flavors to please a crowd.
I am most proud of the way our business has become part of the fabric of what makes downtown Historic Duluth so special. I love and appreciate the way the community has embraced our business. Our customers have become friends, and pleasing them by providing the best pies we can bake is what motivates us.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
When I see a blissful smile on the face of a guest who has just tasted our pie, or I am told that the flavor has transported them on a joyful trip down memory lane, then I know we have succeeded. I am proud to provide a work environment in which our team members can feel valued and inspired to bake and serve the best pies we can to delight our guests.
