Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany McCorkell.
Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from New Jersey. I became a Master Cosmetologist and Wax Artist almost 7 years ago. I am one of the few artists that perform Unisex Full-Body Waxing. I am grateful for all my learning experiences because it has taught me a deeper appreciation and understanding of waxing. I have expressed on many occasions that knowing “HOW” to wax is only one ingredient to a satisfied client. The technique is focusing on my client’s needs and then to apply the system called the “3W’s”: Why does a client want to get waxed? What area on their body does a client want waxed? Where should I start to end with the perfect wax? I am a strong believer in educating my clients about wax services and aftercare products. This love to inform has caused me to coin the phrase, “No Double Dipping,” as it pertains to waxing. I inform my clients of risky practices such as dipping the same wax stick back into the wax pot and creating a container full of germs. This could produce problems to a client’s skin. I have a real desire to educate my clients as well as having fun getting to “Know the Craft,” and building my brand.
These are the keys to being a successful Wax Artist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am a single mother of one 15-year-old amazing son, Deandre Mallory. In the beginning of my career, it was rough. I was fresh out of Cosmetology school and I was broke! I had to find employment and fast to be able to take care of my child. I gained employment at a small salon and I absolutely hated it! I was not that great at hair styling, color, cutting, etc and this meant a very low income. I was struggling to stay afloat therefore, I decided to find employment elsewhere. This decision landed me a job position at the mall, not even using my cosmetology license. One day I applied for a position as a wax artist at a local waxing studio. This is where I found my nitch. I gained a lot of experience and I became successful doing what I loved. I had some life changing events happen in 2014 and decided the best thing for me to do was to relocate to Georgia. I decided that I was not going to work for anyone else. With the help of my business partner, WE built In the City Wax Studio and Skin Care Brand. It has not always been easy however, I am truly grateful for all of my experiences along this journey because it has taught me to work hard and be consistent and the results are AMAZING!!!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
In 2014, I was working for this waxing studio located in New Jersey. I was content in my career however, I always knew that there was more for me. It was at this time that I was blessed to meet this gentleman. He is now my business partner and he saw something in me that I did not see in myself. He was an older professional who inspired and motivated me to become more. He understood my story and decided to work along side of me teaching me and helping me grow into the person I am becoming today. He is a humble man and would bow out and say “You do not owe me anything” however, the truth is I do owe him a lot. I am truly grateful for all of his support and guidance. If it wasn’t for him I may be complacent in working for someone else, making them rich. Even though it is said’ you don’t owe me anything” when someone helps you along the way at the very least they are owed consistent gratitude and respect.
