Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Butler.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Yes. I’ve always had a passion for writing since I was in Kindergarten. It was always easy for me to express my thoughts and feelings through words in my diary- and ultimately writing has always been my scapegoat. (I still have a diary now, but I more so write poems). That being said, when I attended University, I thought I’d dive more in-depth in my writing and discover what my words could transpire into; which was poetry. I had an advantage. In between classes, or even during classes I would always write about things- whether it was my current life situation, men or even what’s going on in the world; it brought me comfort.
I never realized how significant/beneficial creative writing was for me; it could have been a fun adventure to pursue in college. But that’s the thing; writing was just always pinned a hobby; I never thought that it could turn into something groundbreaking. We never know what’s going to happen in life, so I believe everything happens for a reason. I can’t change things, but I am very fortunate to have discovered my passion now then 20 years from now.
When I graduated from Georgia State University in December of 2017, I was unsure as to what I wanted to pursue “career-wise.” I just figured I’d get a job and everything would align itself. Little did I know what I would face in the upcoming months. Once I started working, I knew something wasn’t right. I cried on my way to work the second week I started the job. I knew in my heart and soul I had to get out of an unhealthy working environment. I was going to resign, but I got quote on quote “let go” suddenly. I was a little shocked, but I knew in fact that this was meant to happen. I was actually relieved knowing that my hard work and efforts weren’t being put into a job that I had no drive or interest for.
The last thing I want to point out is that while I was working there, I discovered my love for blogging through a Wix Advertisement on YouTube. Storytelling came next when I knew I could use my words for good. So, I thank God because if it weren’t for the position I was in, I would have never discovered my calling in life which I can now say is writing and telling stories.
Please tell us about your art.
I write. I write about myself, people, current events, music, food and poetry. I don’t limit my writing to one set topic/category. I really write about whatever interests me and things I’m curious to know. Writing is so meaningful to me because it’s an extension of myself. We are all gifted with different traits, and there comes a time in life when you finally tap into your gifts. I recently just found enjoyment writing about other people and showcasing their work. I love storytelling. Touching upon about what other people contribute to society is humbling because it’s essentially what they love doing. (what’s more fun than putting forth an effort to your passion?) I also enjoy taking pictures (with my iPhone 7 camera of course). I’ve been taking pictures for a couple years now and I finally decided to pursue it professionally. I hope to meet with other creatives and travel the world by telling stories through the pictures I capture. Telling stories through images is meaningful because pictures take you back to that moment in time. Once you take in the memories, the photo helps you translate what you see into words.
The inspiration/message comes from being immersed in a community with different people of various backgrounds. I appreciate where I come from. Atlanta has a wide variety of cultures, and I’ve always been exposed to all types of ethnicities. I live in a great environment, and I’m glad that a variation of cultures inspires me even more.
I hope people can feel my presence in my writing because it’s real, it’s me. It’s my most honest form; it’s genuine. Something true about my artwork is that I like to talk about anything and address topics that are not always brought to the public. I’m here on earth to tell stories, have experiences and meet new people so I feel as if everything I display to the world should be real.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice to other artists out there is just to be YOU. In this day in age, we’re always wanting what others have or try to be just as creative as them when truly YOU are the best representation of yourself. No one is like you. No one looks like you, talks like you or thinks like you. Be honest with yourself and find creative outlets which you can better your craft. If there is a particular industry, you’re in, try to link with others you share a common interest in. It will allow you to learn and progress in your work.
A lesson which I wish I would have learned earlier is to really and truly find what I’m passionate about and expand on it. As a kid, I would always try new things whether it was playing the piano or learning tennis- but I never stuck with it. I just always quit. So, if you’re gifted with something that you enjoy and brings eternally happiness inside you, pursue it because you’ll never know where it’ll lead you. Nothing is easy in this life, but just know if you put in the effort day in and day out, something amazing will show up in your journey through life.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Thank God for social media! I have a blog where I write about ALL different topics. Here’s the link: https://brittneysphotos.wixsite.com/mysite
I also have my own Instagram account: brittneysblogx, picsxbrit
People can support the work by reading and engaging in posts whether it’s through Instagram or on my actual blog. I would love for people to give me constructive criticism because why have a platform and not allow others to have their own input/opinions about what you post? I would love for creatives to reach out and collab! I love meeting new faces. Wouldn’t it be cool to meet other friends through the web? YES!!!
