Meet Brooke Jackson of BLJ Collective in Greensboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Jackson.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was growing up, one thing I always connected with was fashion. Of course, I had hundreds of barbies to play dress-up with. I’d love to style them for different occasions. As I got a little older, I enjoyed flipping through magazines to see what trends were in. I started to sketch because I wanted to be able to display the ideas in my head in a creative way. When shopping in the mall (which I did often) I was always be extra attracted to the gowns and dresses. Anything with a sparkle I instantly fell in love with. I’d drag six dresses from one side of the department store to the fitting room so I could try on each one and see what I liked and didn’t like about each. I often thought to myself I’d love to make these on my own. It seemed like an unobtainable goal but low and behold I could get a degree in fashion design/garment construction and that is exactly what I did. In college, I started participating in fashion shows to gain experience. Now with my business, I am continuing to grow through custom orders and personal projects along the way. The next step is to create and pitch a bridal collection which I hope to complete in 2021.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely had my fair share of struggles. Money of course is a huge consideration when designing formal/bridal wear because quality materials are pricey and also hard to source sustainably and locally. Construction is also a challenge because bridal wear uses a lot of couture techniques and finishes which I was not taught in school and I don’t have a consistent mentor for guidance. I’ve looked all over for mentors/tutors but they are hard to find. I will continue to self teach through videos and books but I’d be nice to have one-on-one time with a knowledgeable professional. Lastly, I am a merchandiser for a local company in Greensboro which means I work 8-5 Monday-Friday. I squeeze my extra energy into my business but this is not an easy task so I’d say I ‘d love to have more time to spend solely on my business.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My company is BLJ Collective. “BLJ” are my initials for Brooke Lauren Jackson. I am a fashion visionary. I specialize in Formal wear -specifically bridal and couture. I am known for breathtaking designs and a mix of textures and fabrics to provide the wearer with confidence and excitement. I’m most proud of being a black-owned, woman-owned business and also being heavily self-taught. What sets me apart from others is the flexibility in my designs and the individuality that each piece allows.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory would be traveling. I’d love to go on vacation with my family, sharing quality time with them and experiencing new places.
