Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Thomas and Lynn Rahn.
Brooke and Lynn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Very few customers and clients know that we are mother and daughter. It isn’t until they catch us in an off-topic conversation and I slip up saying “Mom” do they realize our business relationship goes much deeper than consignment furniture and interior styling. I affectionately call my business partner (and mother) “Lynn” so our customers (mostly women) aren’t startled when I call out “mom!” to get measurements or find her in the stacked furniture we curate in the store. Combined, we have been in the business more than 30 years but saw a void five years ago that we felt we could corner and capitalize on.
Secretly, I also wanted a connection with my mom that would keep us close and combine our passions. Lynn has been decorating and styling for decades and I became passionate about home interiors several years ago so the progression of our work partnership was very natural. Our anchor is our store. We have a great appreciation for high-end vintage furniture that without a doubt stands the test of time.
The pieces that come in are specially selected by us for our customers and clients. We are successful because of our customers and our detailed knowledge of their needs and wants. Our customers have become friends we share holidays with and vacation alongside. Our talented team of sales associates is also a major part of our continued success. They are knowledgeable, innovative, and motivated to make our customers happy and coming back for more. And they support Lynn and me in every aspect of our business. Lynn and I do not do our jobs alone.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As I read the question, I knock on wood. Our journey to this point has been smooth. As long as we don’t expect each day to be perfect, each day is exciting and nothing we cannot handle. Being flexible is the only way to be when opening and running a business, especially with family! However, we constantly ask ourselves “How are we going to fit this piece in this already packed store?” The airspace at Clutter is more valuable than New York City’s!
Please tell us about Clutter.
Clutter is about eclectic style for every home on every economic level. There is something for everyone and we work very hard to ensure anyone from any background and neighborhood can find that one unexpected piece that makes them smile and will help make their house (apartment) a home. We consign high end furniture; new and vintage. We also style, decorate, and design homes, rooms, commercial spaces, and gardens. Our customers and clients would say we consistently deliver unique and quality home decor items in an environment that is friendly and inspiring. We are most proud of having nearly 100% return customers after their first visit. Anyone can walk into a store once, just because they are curious. A true compliment is a customer who comes back because they choose to. Our unique relationship as mother and daughter and the cast of characters who surround us set Clutter far apart from all other store and teams.
