Today we’d like to introduce you to the dapper Jimmie L. Gilmore III.
Jimmie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Mississippi, where I began to cut hair at the age of 13. I use to watch my barber cut hair in the late 80’s and early 90’s and I said to myself I can do that. I was cutting hair all through Junior High School all the way through Senior High School. It wasn’t until 2006 where I decided I was going to make this a career.
I moved to Memphis, TN and enrolled into Barber School. I graduated in 2007 and later open up a Barbershop in East Memphis. I went through a partnership dissolution in 2010 and moved to Atlanta in August of 2011. I had a plan when I moved here to Atlanta before departing Memphis. I got to Atlanta found a barbershop here in Buckhead to work at and at the same time I found a Barber College to attend to get my MASTER EDUCATOR license to teach the art of Barbering. I’ve been teaching going on now for 5 years and it’s been phenomenal.
I have taught over 500 plus barber students in the Atlanta and Metropolitan Area and have a 100% passing graduation rate at State Board. I’m also doing my due diligence in the community along with some dynamic sponsors to service CHRIS Kids Non-Profit Organization Youth with Breakfast and Cutz every month. I’m just branding my brand now, which is Keencutz of Atlanta to later provide this industry with proper education and job placement once they finish school. That’s my overall goal along with being international with this trade as well.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road towards my journey. I have experienced a lot of misfortunes and disappointments, but in life, you have to persevere and stay consistent.
Has there been people or an institution that has played a pivotal role in your career?
My mother plays a very pivotal role in my career. My mother used to cut my hair as a young boy in which inspired me to want to learn how to cut. After my mother stops cutting my hair I use to go to my childhood barber and just watch him cut hair all day. For my 12th birthday I told my mom instead of buying me toys and video games can you purchase me a set of clippers. I started to practice on my cousins and friends for free until I developed my barber’s eye for this skill and the rest is history.
Do you have a favorite type of client or project?
I have a lot of projects I’m currently working on which is branding myself to the Atlanta market before I open my own Barbers Institute. As far as a particular client or clients I value all my clients I serve with the utmost professional and quality care. I have around 170 clients according to records that I serve ranging from Doctors, Lawyer, regular 9-5 employees, etc.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would definitely change the way I was being taught the educational side of Barbering. A lot of information I learn while going to a private school in Memphis, Tn. wasn’t given to the student thoroughly, which prompted me to go back to get my Barber Instructors License and make sure each and everyone receives the proper information they need for this chosen field.
