Meet Buckhead Hairdresser and Makeup Artist: Erika Valentine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Valentine.

Erika, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I have always been a creative and super artistic human being. I grew up watching my grandmother be a hairdresser and loved it. I used to get in trouble for cutting my little cousin’s hair and anyone who I could get my hands on, including the dog. I continued getting achievement awards for creative writing and Art throughout school. When I turned down an art scholarship and enrolled in beauty school my life changed. I was exposed to great talent and even greater opportunities early in my career. I became a makeup artist in Hollywood. I was able to be a part of many photoshoots, TV, Film, and was picked up to tour with Kanye West. I have now found a home in Atlanta with Jamison Shaw Hairdressers, whom I have been with for nearly 5 years. I love my JSH family and all of my clientele! Educating across the nation and in Atlanta with our French cutting and balayage academy is so rewarding.I am also a mother of two who loves spending time with my family outdoors and having fun.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not. I have had personal challenges because I am my own worst critic. Also, people can be very mean, self-righteous, and blatantly back stabbing. It’s a dog eat dog world out there. But there are also good people and I have been blessed to always have some genuine ones along the way I still call friends.

Is there some part of you work that is particularly difficult?
There is a lot of multi-tasking involved. Our job is technical, emotional, laborious, and fast paced. It takes a lot of concentration, impeccable listening skills, understanding people’s psychology, passion and education to have seemlessness.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me is doing what you love. Making others happy and feel their best. When you are a person of good values, love, kindness, and integrity who is talented everything else follows.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the future, I can see myself getting into movies and TV full time.

She is the only person I trust with my hair. Someone that loves what they do and it shows in her work.
