Meet Buckhead Personal Trainer & Yoga Instructor: Kate Schettler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Schettler.

Kate has been pursuing her own personal fitness goals since the age of 6 when she first began taking dance lessons. At 11 years old, Kate started doing Jane Fonda videos and ESPN workout shows after school; by the age of 15 she was a member of Bally’s and committed to working out daily. Throughout high school and college, Kate took dance classes and pursued various athletic activities including lacrosse, softball, aerobics, running, and swimming.

After studying Musical Theater at Syracuse University and graduating from the State University of New York with a B.S. in Education/Music, Kate relocated to Nashville, TN in 2006. In addition to her music pursuits there, fitness remained an equally strong passion for Kate. She obtained her AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer certification in February 2010 and immediately began training clients. In 2011, Kate became an AFAA-certified group exercise instructor and began teaching classes in Nashville.

Yoga is Kate’s specialty. She is certified through YogaFit Training Systems and has specialty training in Therapeutic Back and Pre-Natal Yoga. In 2011, Kate created ‘Nashville Divas’, a fitness & yoga company designed to empower clients of all ages.

Since moving to Atlanta in June 2014, Kate has renamed her business Kate Schettler Fitness and is thrilled to be working with clients in the Buckhead area. Kate’s services include personal training, private & group yoga instruction, and nutrition coaching. Kate Schettler Fitness helps you pinpoint your specific needs, set strategic goals, and propel you toward optimal health and wellness.

Kate truly lives the concepts she advocates for her clients. Dedicated to core fitness principles, she strives daily for higher levels of personal and professional growth. Kate looks forward to helping you achieve your fitness goals so you can let your best self-shine!

Has it been a smooth road?
I think the biggest challenge has been the ups and downs of being a small business owner and riding the waves that go along with that. Entrepreneurship involves a certain level of risk-taking and that can be scary at times. So aside from my passion for fitness and yoga, I have to be the businesswoman too which is a totally different skill set. I’ve learned a lot but still have many more mountains to climb!

What role has luck had in your life and career?
I would say that good “luck” comes from consistently working hard, showing up and staying open to opportunities…and saying yes to them when they come along. Also, recognizing that every interaction in the community is a potential business meeting. For example, one day I was at the Apple Store Genius Bar waiting to get my laptop fixed…and I struck up a conversation with the lady sitting next to me. Turns out she was shopping for a personal trainer and I just happened to come along at the perfect time. She ended up becoming a regular client of mine. Some might call that luck, but I would say it was just being in the moment and being open to a personal connection.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A combination of both persistence and resilience. Entrepreneurship can be a roller-coaster ride, so you gotta be ready to ride the waves and bounce back when things get tough. For me, persistence means the ability to self-evaluate, regroup, adjust where necessary and try again…not just doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. Also, when it comes to my clients, I believe that being a good listener is a huge key to success. We all have the innate need to be understood…so as a trainer, I want my clients to know I’m tuned into their goals.

Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
I love the diversity and sub-cultures within Atlanta. You can experience an upscale vibe in Buckhead, an artsy hipster energy in Inman Park or Krog Street, or a neighborhood feel in Virginia Highlands. There is no lack of options for dining, entertainment and community events in our city. Also, this is a very green city with lots of outdoor space for staying fit and active…plus a ton of great yoga studios and fitness centers.
