Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Buckingham.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Fitness and health have always been an important part of my upbringing in my hometown of Big Rapids, Michigan. My father, Tim Buckingham, is a marathon runner, former basketball coach, and avid cyclist. My mother, Lisa Buckingham, is a former Health, PE, and Aerobics teacher, and now runs half-marathons, participates in group races, and is a kettlebell instructor. My brother, Dr. Todd Buckingham, is a 2-Time World Champion in Triathlon, 7-Time National Champion in Triathlon and Duathlon, 4-Time Winner of the Warrior Dash (before he got into Triathlons), former collegiate athlete (Baseball), and has a doctorate in Exercise Physiology.
Needless to say, it’s in my blood!
I played Soccer, Football, and Basketball in High school and went to college to play Football and Basketball. During my freshman year, I suffered a career-ending injury: a herniated disk in my back, a torn hamstring, and a broken ischial tuberosity (my right butt cheek…ouch!). After nearly one and a half years of rehab and physical therapy I was able to return to activity, but not before gaining 40lbs! At my heaviest weight I was 204lbs, unable to use much of my right leg, and incredibly depressed.
I attempted to wash the dishes next to my father at the sink over the holiday break but couldn’t fit…and that’s when I knew something needed to change.
I began using a calorie counting and exercise tracking app called MyFitnessPal to track how much food I was eating (thanks, Todd!) and logged in for the next 1409 days in a row. I was dedicated (to say the least!) to my goals, but also to learning as much as possible in the process. After about two years I was able to lose the weight I had gained from my injury, rebuilding myself back from the ground up, and pursue new opportunities that would have never been possible without my injury. Thanks, life!
Nine years post-injury, I am 40lbs lighter, pain-free, and a whole lot happier! I am also certified by the PPSC (Pain-Free Performance Specialist Certification course created by Dr. John Rusin) and the ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association). My specialties include: Functional Strength Training, Strength and Conditioning for Professional, Collegiate, and High School Athletes, and Weight Loss.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I mentioned before, this has not been a smooth road at all: severe injuries, limited walking capabilities, and deep depression. Ooof.
But without that experience, I would never have learned how resilient I could become in my own life and how my resiliency could be used to help others find their own.
“There are many obstacles in your way. Don’t let yourself become one.”
Buckingham Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Buckingham Fitness was founded on the basis of health and fitness for all ages and levels structured around the 6 Foundational Movement Patterns: Squat, Hinge, Lunge, Push, Pull, and Carry. Each movement is utilized on a day-to-day basis, therefore we should train our bodies for the daily activities we will be engaging in with an emphasis on mobility and strength to build a resilient foundation for our bodies!
I think my personality sets me apart from others in the fitness industry. I get more excited when my clients lose weight or hit a PR in a lift than they do! I love seeing others succeed and it’s an honor having a small part in their success.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment of my career is simply creating my business. It never existed until I went out and built it. To create something from nothing is very empowering, but to know that by creating this business I have been able to help other people reach their goals and experience life with less pain…well, that’s the true reward.
