Meet Caleb Scott of Artisans Bar & Gallery in South Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Scott.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have spent my whole life being involved with and surrounded by art and music. My family has always been very musically inclined and bred in me a deep appreciation for music from all over the world. They are also very artistic and encouraged me to pursue a career in the arts very early on. As I grew up, I naturally gravitated towards art and entertainment and had the pleasure of working with incredible visual artists and world-renowned musicians. With this space, I have combined my lifelong passion and experience to build an inviting, safe space for other creative spirits like myself.

Has it been a smooth road?
As many artists know, when we come up with something new the world does not necessarily know what to do with it. When we went down to city hall to apply for all the necessary permits, we had some very amusing conversations with folks down there because no one had ever heard of an art gallery that was also a bar. The entire permitting process and all following steps often felt like we were communicating in a foreign language. That, combined with the challenges of being first-time business owners, have left us with some unforgettable memories. But we are glad we have made it this far!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Artisans Bar & Gallery story. Tell us more about the business.
We are most proud of the fact that artists, musicians and creatives of all genres and walks of life have felt welcomed at our venue. Most of them have never seen a spot that combines live entertainment and visual art at a low key bar with warm and friendly faces. On any given week, people can walk into the place and be exhilarated by spoken word artists, activated by politically charged comedians, attend a fundraiser for a worthy cause or see some of the most talented musicians Atlanta has to offer. There just is no other place in Atlanta like this and with a reasonable price-point.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
As it is with any good idea, we expect this concept to catch on. We hope other venues will create similar encouraging and safe environments for artists and musicians to flourish in. Atlanta is abundant with creative minds and energy so this can only be a boon for the city and the south as a whole.
