Meet Cameron Cullers of Empower Mentorship and Martial Arts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Cullers.

Hi Cameron, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started martial arts at the powerful age of 5 years old in Detroit MI. My siblings and I all took Martial Arts as kids. I was the only one out of my siblings to continue training throughout my life. I loved martial arts because I really wanted to become a professional Ninja. I also despised it because it was so hard on the mind, body and emotions. Our teacher was a very mean and tyrant man. Through the discipline I attained, I learned how to apply martial arts to my life and overtime, teach It to others in a way they would enjoy learning it.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My martial arts journey has not been a smooth road. I have experienced physical attacks along with mental and emotional ones. Though martial arts has opened many doors of opportunities. It was also filled with conflicts of racism, prejudice, accusations, doubt, fear and hatred from others. Many people do not want to see a man of my stature, build and skin color successfully pouring back into his community in a positive way. Through it all I still remain on my feet and crushing the competition. Especially those who threatened and dreamed of stopping me. To those who tried attacking me and stopping me….Never forget, when it comes to helping others and serving my community, I AM UNSTOPPABLE.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
EMPOWER Mentorship and Martial Arts is a safe haven for all people to find out who they are and understand the power of believing in themselves. This martial arts school was designed to help any child starting at the age of three, to understand just how special and needed they are. We don’t just teach students how to kick and punch. We teach them how to stand in their own presence and stand proudly. Our mission is to offer real life, applicable techniques that can be applied in real situations whether in the street or in the Dojo. Our Goal is to provide an applicable curriculum that will ensure our students and their families safety. Having studied and been certified to teach in multiple styles. I like to take my experience and use it as a tool to teach, mentor and uplift students into the highest versions of themselves. I hold multiple Black Belts as well as State and World Championships in martial arts. I was ranked #3 in the world for weapons with my specialty being the sword. I love Sparring and hand to hand combat but I am well versed in Krav Maga, Judo and Jujitsu among many other styles and systems. I am most proud of my kids and how they take the teachings, embrace them and grow with them. I love all of my students and I am truly grateful that they, as well as their parents trust our services here at Empower MMA.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I Absolutely love mentorship. That is what my business is built on. Mentoring scholars to become mentors. I feel that everyone should have a mentor. Someone you can confide in. Someone who creates a safe space to be vulnerable. Mentors don’t always have to agree with our actions or even support them. Mentors are the ones that have the hard conversations with you. I believe in tough love but also respectful corrections. Playing football and Basketball as a kid, I had a lot of coaches that would curse at me and call me and other teammates out of our names. Never once did any of those coaches pour into me outside of the field and basketball courts. Due to that experience, I like going above and beyond for my scholars. I enjoy showing up to other activities they have outside of martial arts. I create programs outside of our regular curriculum to support their emotional , mental and spiritual needs. Ultimately provide a safe space for our students to feel love and supported. I just created the APEX (Affirming. Positive. Energy. Xchange) program for 13-17 year old teenage boys to have someone to lean on and talk to. We meet every Monday at 6:30pm and Saturdays at 11am. I also partnered with non-profit organization Fresh Start Kidz, which allows scholars who have experienced a loss of family member to gun violence to have a safe place to learn, grow, be fed and loved.

I would like to thank the schools that have stood by our program in partnership over the years, Imhotep Academy, Ethos Classical Charter, Amana Academy West. I’d also like to thank my team that never turned their back on me and my ideas. Never was afraid to come to the studio and participate and work with the scholars, Dr. Anjil Jeter, and Coach Camryn Jones.
