Meet Candace Campbell of Ugly Hair Prevention in Augusta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Campbell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Candace. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always loved playing in hair. My Kenya dolls hair would be dyed using my lip gloss maker dye from the set, braided and cut. My daddy made us try to learn how to cut men’s hair at nine years old by using himself as a model. In high school, for extra money, I loved to razor eyebrows and sell candy. The hustle was instilled in me very early. Leaving high school, I realized that even though my initial plans were to go for fashion design and marketing, I needed to change to my plan b, Cosmetology I enrolled in Augusta Tech for cosmetology. I became the first student active licensed for both cosmetology/barbering. With nine years in, I’ve worked on all different types of textures and races. I’ve been featured in Sophinsticates Black Hair Magazine in July/June 2018 and March/September 2019.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not.At.All.Sometimes, I’ve went into my savings just to pay booth rent because I didn’t make enough. People take credit for work. Clients won’t all pay. Assistants won’t show up for work or photoshoots. It gets crazy.
