Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Daniels-Hazelton.
Candice, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It was like I woke up one day and my body internally went on strike. Everything that I was using, eating and doing no longer seemed to catch my interest, let alone work anymore and no matter what I used on my skin and hair it always reacted to it. After 3 1/2 years of studying marketing at Norfolk State University, I made the decision to drop out of college and figure out my passion and what makes me happy. Within that time I started to make body butters to see if it could help relieve me from my skincare & hair problems. With little to no results, I made the choice to quit making them, move to Georgia with my husband and figure my life out from there.
Three years later, I made the choice that I wanted to make serious changes in my life. So I decided to start with my lifestyle starting with the inside out. I started doing yoga and meditation and I changed the way it eats, I stopped eating meat and eventually I ended up loving it so much that I turned it into my lifestyle. The more I learned about food and healthy living the more I wanted to learn about what was in my skincare products.
After months of intensive research, I found that a lot of the brands I grew up loving & using were harmful for my body and that they are made with chemical-filled toxic ingredients. It was from that knowledge that urged me to take control and change the narrative when it comes to skincare for people of color. My products are catered to everyone, but it’s important to me that we as a culture are aware of what were putting on our bodies and how our bodies are truly a temple.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Absolutely not, A lot of the struggles were personal. Insecurities, lack of faith, lack of self-confidence and most importantly lack of self-discipline. I struggled with depression and anxiety before opening my business and being your own boss is tough, it’s a big transition and things like that take time to complete. And if you aren’t mentally prepared for that, then it’s going to be a tough road. It’s easy to know it, but it’s different when you’re in it. But it’s part of the journey and it’s always a beautiful thing to be present in.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Here at Mother of Earth, we are an all natural plant based skin line. Everything is handmade and handled by me right here in Atlanta, Ga. We specialize in a variety of products from Organic Soap Bars, Skincare, Face care products & Men Care products. We are most known for our Yoni Wash which is an all natural Ph balancing vaginal wash.
What I am most proud of is the fact we as a company are able to create an experience. Skincare is self-care, and self-care is practiced when you are using products you love. I love making another female or man feel good about themselves and their self-confidence. It’s important to spread the message of self-love and self-care, its what sets us apart from others.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always a free spirit, I flowed with however I felt. Growing up I was different in each phase, as a child I was an introvert, I loved to read, write, play with dolls and really stay to myself. I was always comfortable with my own company. As a teenager, the free spirt in me rebelled and became outgoing but I always reeled it in when needed to. I lived a healthy balance of safe and wild.
