Meet Candice VanWye of Monday & Co in Old Fourth Ward

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice VanWye.

Candice, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m an entrepreneur currently running a small coworking space and content studio for creative black women in Atlanta, GA. I also run Brown Girl Bloggers which is an influencer agency and community that represents black and brown women who create content online.

I’ve always been a “hustler.” My journey to entrepreneurship began in middle school when I decided to make money selling candy to my classmates after my school switched to healthier snack machines. I went out and bought a $2 pack of 200 piece candy and sold each piece for 25 cents or more. I eventually started selling chips and recruiting people to sell for me. That was my first lesson in supply and demand.

After a while, the haters in the front office shut me down but it was too late because I’d already been bitten by the entrepreneurship bug. There’s something about being directly responsible for the money and my days that appeals to me. Throughout high school and college, I started several businesses while going to school and working for other companies.

After graduating from The College of Charleston with a degree in Communication and moving to California, I decided to give corporate America a try but soon found it wasn’t for me. In 2013 I started freelancing and I haven’t looked back since! My most recent clients included a high-end jewelry gallery, a real estate broker, and a sealant salesman… among others. I love helping small to medium sized business owners with their marketing and administrative needs.

I blog at lifeinstyle.co, record the Life Notes Podcast, and host events whenever I can. It’s safe to say I’m never bored. I’m open to opportunities to speak and travel. The subjects that I love to speak about the most are cultivating communities, how to get hired, small business, and building a business the nontraditional way.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most of my struggles have revolved around getting funding for my coworking space. Investors haven’t really been interested so I funded the entire project myself.

Monday & Co – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Monday & Co is a coworking space and content studio for creative black women. We host workshops and events so that our members stay up-to-date on how their industries are evolving and as networking opportunities. We aim to be a beautiful, inviting, and inspiring place for black women to work. We want our space to be free of all “code-switching” and worries about how our blackness is received.

We have a podcast studio as well as a space in our studio for video and photo shoots. We also have an amazing patio and outdoor area and all the usual perks of coworking. Our amenities include a conference room, coffee/tea, high-speed internet, along with free events.

I love that we have a creative community that isn’t competitive or cliquey. We are truly here for the women in our space. This space is for our members. They will dictate programming, our hours, and even where new locations will be.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I have a very simple definition for success. I want to be happy at the end of my day. I know that every single day won’t be happy but I aim to have more happy days than not.

I don’t want to attach success to my career or even my personal life because those things both have highs and lows. Instead, I try to be a good and honest person while spending my days doing things that I love.
