Meet Carine Guerrier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carine Guerrier.

Hi Carine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a town called Willingboro, NJ with two sisters (one being my twin) & two brothers. My older sister was in high school in the 90’s & I used to think she was so cool and stylish with her hair and makeup. Once I was old enough, I began doing the same thing. Fast forward to my high school days, I remember drawing on eyebrows and putting on some eyeliner (that was my go to). One day I went to the MAC in our mall and almost instantly one of the makeup artists (who is very much well known today) walked up to me & said “who did your eyebrows?” I said me. He then said “you need to work here and become a makeup artist. I honestly was so shocked & flattered. Once he said that I dubbed myself the “Hair & makeup artist for all my cousins. I never aspired to be a makeup artist, hence why my 1st paying customer wasn’t until I moved to GA in 2016. By then, 11 years had passed already. This was the start of Beauty By Carine G. I give credit to my cousin who started telling her friends that I did makeup (when I didn’t even have a kit), but she knew I didn’t move to GA to work behind someone’s desk. Her encouragement pushed me to step out of my introverted comfort zone & helped propel me to where I am now.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Truth is that it has not been a smooth road. Being used to a steady income that a day job provided me, to then starting entrepreneurship was challenging. I never worked at a beauty counter nor have I ever had a mentor. Being a self-taught MUA & trying learn how to scale a business with know guidance was tough. There were plenty of times where I didn’t have clients. I knew I needed a real plan. I worked a 9-5 and knew it wasn’t going to boost my clientele that’s when I began working at a few lounges & got to meet some really awesome women whom loved my makeup and trusted me to do theirs. Business started picking back up, & I knew it was now or never. I decided to leave my day job & fully commit to being a makeup artist after 2.5 years of being Atlanta. This was the best decision ever. I’ve since worked with a range of different people from influencers to castmates on LHHNY & Black Ink Crew. One of my most surreal moments as an artist was when Essence reached out for me to work on a campaign shoot that led to more opportunities and also commercials. I’ve also had my work on Billboards on some of the most frequented roads in the city.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from other artists is that I try to educate my clients on what’s necessary to maintain lasting makeup or even what steps to take to ensure that their skin is properly treated before every appointment. Clients appreciate the tips and tricks I offer. Always giving the client what THEY want & not just giving them what I want. This shows range & captivates a broader audience. As a makeup artist, I really believe in getting to know my clients. This helps in delivering the best experience for them.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risk is key to never living ordinary. I never wanted to live ordinary. I left my career & my family behind and moved to Atlanta by myself. I had an understanding that things might get uncomfortable but I knew I was willing to accept any challenge that came my way. While there were moments of doubt, I never allowed those thoughts to fester. I have a great support system and my faith in God. My family & my boyfriend really encouraged me to push beyond. For example, a new risk that I am taking with my boyfriend. We are venturing into a new industry and opening a restaurant, Al Dente Pizza & Pasta that will be opening soon. It’s a completely new territory for us but we’re invested in this risk and ready for everything that comes with it.
