Meet Carl Breeding of CarMichael Music Group in South West Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carl Breeding.

Carl, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My interest in music began as a child, being exposed to the gospel while attending church with my mother. In my early teens, I started to play instruments. First, drums. Then, the piano. I began touring my senior year of high school as a keyboardist for several gospel acts; this allowed me to see the world abroad. In my early twenties, I partnered with a fellow musician and started my first studio. During this time, I produced gospel and jazz primarily. It wasn’t until after reconnecting with an old schoolmate, who was also a producer, that I began producing secular music, R&B as well as hip/hop. Together, we formed the music production company ‘Track Team Productions.’ As a company, Track Team was instrumental in creating music and helping to solidify record deals for the likes of Jagged Edge and Destiny’s Child. As a producer, I’ve had the opportunity to produce artists such as Dr. Dre, Eminem, Too Short, Pink, Mya, Jhene Aiko, and others. Fast-forward to the present. I am now CEO of an independent label called ‘CarMichael Music Group.’

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been struggles along the way. Initially, it was learning how to manage money properly; living check to check is even more difficult if you work in the music business. I also had to learn how to choose the right people and make the right decisions in business; every deal is not a good one. The business has a tendency of taking one’s love of the music away, so, learning how to maintain that love is vital. I’ve also had to learn to embrace the digital age and the internet. Streaming changed the entire game. Finally, being able to sacrifice time from family and friends to pursue a career in the music business is always a struggle.

Please tell us about the company.
The company produces music for different purposes. The company houses several producers and writers, along with several signed artists. Besides producing albums/projects for artists, CarMichael does a great deal of music for movie and TV sync licensing. Our artist, Danii Roundtree, has scored WayFair’s national Christmas campaign for a consecutive two years with one of her Christmas songs produced by CarMichael producers and released on CarMichael’s label.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Perhaps it was when Destiny’s Child became the industry’s all time selling girl’s group or when I produced tracks for the “Chronic 2001”. I’ve had a lot of proud moments, but I find myself still in awe of any of my accomplishments no matter how large or small they. I still get excited when I hear one of my songs on the radio, T.V., some movies or if it makes the billboard charts.
