Today we’d like to introduce you to Carline Smothers.
Carline, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Wife, mother, author, and founder of ZOE BEAUTEE, which stands for Haitian Beauty. My slogan is “Expressing Beauty Through Language”. Growing up, Haitians were viewed negatively, with awful stereotypes. I created ZOE BEAUTEE as a brand that would celebrate and teach Haitian culture and beauty.
I also strive to bring pride and self-love within our community. I created a clothing line various t-shirts with phrases written in Creole and English, such as Bèl Fanm (Beautiful Woman), ZOE PROUD (Proud Haitian), I ❤️ being Haitian, and Bon Nèg (Goodman/guy). Swimsuits with a few favorite childhood fruits, and Athletic Wear. I’ve had a few fashion shows showcasing Haitian talents.
My children’s book series, ZOE BEAUTEE Little Reader’s Collection shares a small insight of the Haitian culture in literature. The main character in my series is Carline, who represents my younger self. In the first book entitled Fanmi Mwen (My family) you will meet a few members of Carline’s family. Second book, Mmmmm! Soup Joumou! Teaching about Haitian Independence Day. My daughter Nivea was inspired and wrote her first book, “N is for Nivea” at age six to teach her sister the alphabets, which is also a part of the ZOE BEAUTEE Little Reader’s Collection. I also had a cartoon animation of Carline created. Bridging the gap for our youth to learn, and embrace culture diversity. Representation matters.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. I had a few struggles, self-doubt and not believing in myself in the beginning. The fear of feeling like I did not have the knowledge or resources to start and continue. My husband is my backbone; he pushes me to keep going even when I doubt myself and remember why I started.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m a wife, mother, and entrepreneur. I have found my calling in life. Even when I’m asleep, I’m thinking and strategizing. The idea of my business came about in 2011. Once I saw the positive impact it had on my community, I knew I found my purpose. I am extremely proud of how far I have grown. I think what sets me apart from other companies is, I stay in my own lane. This is not a gimmick for me; I strive to be authentic and innovating. Sometimes I could work a full day and not make any money, but I’m happy, the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. My happiness is what confirms that I’m doing the right thing.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes. Living in Atlanta, GA has opened my mind in so many ways. When meeting new people, while out and about, I’m inspired. Majority of people I’ve met are living in their purpose and building. A lot of business-minded individuals, from children to adults.
