Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Matthews.
Carter, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, I started playing drums when I was about 12 years old and focusing solely on my drumming until I was 16 and formed a band called Simple As Surgery. That band was the launchpad to my musical career. After forming the band, my priorities shifted from drumming to singing and I completely fell in love with not being tied down to a drum kit when playing live shows. I spent the latter of my teen years through 21 promoting, touring, and recording music with Simple As Surgery until venturing out on my own solo project and then eventually forming a Dance Project in Los Angeles with my cousin that was called DSKO (Which he still continues today).
Four years ago, when I was 23 I decided to step back from being on the public side of music and started taking a great interest in production and songwriting for other artists and companies which is the current state of my musical journey, but after four years away and a lot of personal and emotional growth, I have been working on the launch and rebranding of my solo career going under my given name, Carter Matthews. As well as a duo project with my wife Called Carter & EA, we just released our debut single “Dust & Ashes” everywhere that you stream or listen to music online!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have been really blessed to have a family and friends that have loved and supported me through my entire career – but I would be foolish to say that there wasn’t some really dark places I found myself in. Moments of losing focus on the things that matter and times of doubting myself and my creative process. There have been plenty of times thinking, “Man, did I make the right choice? Should I have just taken a normal path and not follow my dreams?” But for every bad time, there have been ten great ones and it makes all of the troubles seem like just a blip on the radar. All in all, I couldn’t be happier.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I am a producer and songwriter. I don’t truly view myself as a company but more of an individual that strives to make the best product for my clients and the people that I work for and with. I’m very proud of the fact that I never try to stifle and artist’s creativity but rather to help them and push them to their fullest potential. Or when it comes to companies or businesses that hire me, it doesn’t matter the size or caliber I will always do my best to deliver a product that they can be proud of and something they are excited about sharing.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have paid more attention to the people that have been in the game longer than me. I would have swallowed a lot of pride and been more willing to listen to people that were just trying to help. But I know starting over isn’t and option and I’m happy to take everything as a learning experience and grow from it.
